Money Woes-The Bottom Line (Part I)
By Rebecca Harris, MS, LPC, CEAP
This month the focus will be on how decisions in life are often influenced more by our financial status than just about all other factors combined. When surveyed about what causes the most stress in their lives, people overwhelmingly list financial uncertainty at the top of the list.
Our finances affect our lives, and subsequently everything in our lives, including our job performance. People often speak of the stresses of their family life, the co-parenting issues of separate households, relationship issues, health issues, job stress, and a litany of other concerns. It has been documented that due to the distractions that are inherent with this stress, people's productivity at work is diminished by up to 49%. This is linked to increased illness, absence from work, and is often a distraction to co-workers.
One person's money stress can have far-reaching impact. HR directors report that a great deal of their time can be taken dealing with wage garnishment and bill collectors calling employees at work. The bottom line is that many stressors are either directly or indirectly related to our financial picture.Too many bills, not enough income. It's a recipe for money woes, but it doesn't have to be. Visit Solutions EAP online or call 1-800-526-3485 for assistance for all life's challenges. It is free, confidential, and open to family members. |
