Valuable Opportunity to Prepare for a Career in Precision Manufacturing
Spend enough time in a machine shop, and you will recognize the sound a carbide bit makes as it carves into an aluminum block. With experience, you can hear when the bit is dull or when a milling machine is out of adjustment. In the Manchester Community College machine shop, you can hear the sound of career opportunity knocking, too. Click here to read more.

Bookstore News
Follett's Bookstore at MCC is making a bold statement in support of the environment by no longer automatically placing every purchase in a shopping bag. Instead, the bookstore team will encourage students to use their backpack, purse or reusable bags when shopping at the bookstore. Cashiers will continue to supply a shopping bag if specifically requested or needed due to a customer's inability to carry all items or bad weather conditions.
Plastic bags are dangerous to a healthy eco-system and studies have shown that paper bags are no better - requiring significant amounts of energy to create and recycle. Non-biodegradable bags, which can take up to 1,000 years to decompose, are stacking up in landfills and clogging waterways - generating a global issue that is being tackled at the government and campus levels through the institution of bans or taxes. Follett's goal for this academic year is to reduce the production and distribution of more than 3.5 million bags.
Today's students welcome opportunities to reduce waste and incorporate sustainable practices in their day-to day tasks. Many higher education institutions have initiatives in place or are partnering with organizations such as The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) in an effort to improve sustainable practices on campus. Follett is taking the lead in sustainable academic retailing. Follett's Bookstore at MCC joins Follett's network of more than 930 campus stores across the United States and Canada driving down the use of disposable shopping bags.
The idea behind this and many of Follett's sustainable strategies is that little differences across the network add up to a significant impact. The new no bag initiative will minimize plastic bag consumption without disrupting operations and will promote environmental responsibility while continuing to provide students with superior service.
To ensure a smooth transition for the community, Follett's Bookstore at MCC is displaying 'We're Part of the Solution' marketing materials to reinforce the benefits and purpose with all bookstore customers. Training materials have been updated so bookstore associates know when to offer a bag in efforts to support customers and provide a truly exceptional shopping experience. In addition a press release spotlighting the no bag initiative taking place on MCC's campus will be sent out to local media.
Fo more information regarding the new shopping bag policy, please visit or contact the bookstore at 860-645-3140 or 0814mgr@fheg.follett.com. |

Benefits of Having A Pet, Part 3
By Solutions EAP
Animals and Elders -
Residents of nursing homes are more apt to experience a greater sense of well-being and less depression when animals are present. In addition, it has been found that this has a positive impact on the overall cost of caring for patients and results in a decrease in the use of prescription drugs.
Those are just examples in nursing homes. For individuals who continue to live on their own the benefits are clear. Pets help us remain more active, provide routine and consistency, and lead to more socialization. People living at home who own a pet have fewer medical appointments and minor health problems. A study at a Veteran's hospital showed the residents have more verbal interactions with each other when a dog was in the room. Dogs have also been shown to increase socialization for people with Alzheimer's.
Demographically the population is aging and in the not too distant future the largest age group will be the elderly, those 65 and over. Already, issues dealing with the elderly are becoming more important as family members age and care giving becomes an issue. So knowing a bit about the possible benefits that pets bring to this part of our population is very important. Visit Solutions EAP online or call 1-800-526-3485 for assistance for all life's challenges. It is free, confidential, and open to family members. |
