Mistakes at Work - Part 3
By Marcia Eager, LCSW, CEAP
Solutions EAP Coordinator
You realize you have made a mistake and need to "fess-up". What are some things you can do to correct the mistake?
- Admit your mistake - do it sooner rather than later! This is the first step in dealing with the problem and the first step to a successful turn-around.
- Take responsibility and be prepared to clean up the mess; you need a plan. You should have a clear idea of what went wrong and how you can fix it, and be open to learning for the future.
- Don't blame others for your mistake - One person is seldom responsible for a mistake and you may encourage others to take responsibility but that doesn't always happen. You will be seen in a positive light and this can be a big step in restoring trust.
- Apologize - be sincere. Don't play the martyr. Many people may be affected by your mistake, so let them know you understand and hope they will recognize your fallibilities as a human being.
- Offer to become actively involved in correcting the mistake and be open to what you can learn from the event.
Call Solutions EAP at 1-800-526-3485 for assistance for all of life's challenges. It's free, confidential and open to family members. Check EAP out online. |
