Middlesex Community College Pegasus Gallery - Daniel Mosher Long, "Eye / Object"
January 30 - March 2, 2012
Daniel Long's still life photographs combine domestic, utilitarian, and natural materials in unexpected ways. These color saturated images are closely cropped and appear to occupy a real rather than an illusionistic two-dimensional space. Juxtapositions of insect specimens, fine dinnerware, animal bones, flowers, fabric, vintage advertisements and antique packaging offer narratives associated with the past in as much as their time here in the present.
Long received an M.A. in Photography from Purdue University and an M.A. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Connecticut. He has exhibited his work nationally. See more images of his work at danielmosherlong.com.

Make Way for the "Millenials" Part II
By Kelly Huffman, MS, LPC, CEAP
EAP Counselor, Middlesex Hospital EAP
Millenials at Work
A recent survey polled 637 working Americans about their views of Millenials in the workplace. The survey found that 68 percent feel that millennials are less motivated to take on responsibility and produce quality work compared to their counterparts. Nearly half (46 percent) think millennials are less engaged at work than other employees. On the plus side, 78 percent of workers agreed that millennials are more tech-savvy in the workplace than other generations, and 70 percent of all respondents (including 85 percent of millennials) consider this technological edge to be an inherent career advantage. Read more about this survey at www.workplaceoptions.com
Does this mean that Millenials don't care about work and don't work hard? Not necessarily. Millenials view work differently than previous generations. They want work that is meaningful and allows them to balance work and home. They will work hard at something they find interesting and are not as focused on individual achievements or "climbing the ladder." Millenials value flexibility in when and where they get their work done. Perhaps this is because they are used to being "plugged in" and essentially available at all times. The Millenials are accustomed to a fast-paced, changing world. Information is literally at their fingertips and they communicate at warp speed. They are expert multi-taskers. They thrive when working in teams to come up with creative ideas and solve problems. Many have good leadership skills and an entrepreneurial spirit. Think Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook.
Given the large influx of Millenials into the workplace, it is wise to try to understand them and not necessarily force them to adapt to our ways of doing things. So keep the following in mind when managing Millenials:
- Keep them challenged. They are used to change and do not like to be bored.
- They love working in teams and are skilled at networking.
- Encourage their "can do" spirit.
- Keep expectations clear and provide frequent feedback.
- Take advantage of their technological skills.
- Ask for and respect their opinions and ideas.
- Offer flexibility in the workplace.
Call Solutions EAP at 1-800-526-3485 for assistance for all of life's challenges. It's free, confidential and open to your family members. Check us out online.
