Make Way for the "Millenials" Part I

By Kelly Huffman, MS, LPC, CEAP

EAP Counselor, Middlesex Hospital EAP

Recently I received an article about a study of Millenials in the workplace.  The title of the article was "Millenials: Work Ethic Lacking."  As the parent of a Millenial, I became concerned.  Are the Millenials lazy and unmotivated?  I decided to learn more about this generation.

Who are the Millenials?

While there is no universally agreed upon time frame, Millenials, also called Generation Y, are people who were born between 1980 and the year 2000.  They are the children of Baby Boomers and Generation X.  Over 90 million Americans are part of the generation, which makes it the largest generation since the Boomers.  They are the teens and twenty-somethings who were making the passage into adulthood at the start of a new millennium.

What are the typical characteristics of the Millenials?

Here are some words that are thrown around when talking about this generation:

Confident

Upbeat

Liberal

Diverse

Open to change

Self-expressive

Protected

Impatient

Inclusive

Close to family

Service-minded

Special

Multi-taskers

Pressured

Creative

Achieving

Sheltered

Balanced

Team-oriented

Tech-savvy

These children grew up in a time of relative economic prosperity.  They have seen many acts of terrorism (9/11, Columbine, Oklahoma City) and have witnessed numerous natural disasters (Hurricane Katrina, the tsunami in Japan, the earthquake in Haiti).  Their parents have been accused of being over involved in their lives (remember the "Helicopter" parents?) yet many of them feel very close to their parents.  Their schools, workplaces, and communities are much more diverse.  Technology has been a huge part of their world.

What are the Millenials' priorities?

In 2010, the Pew Research Center published a report that explores the behaviors, values, and opinions of today's teens and twenty-somethings that make up the Millenial Generation.  Their number one priority?  It is being a good parent (52%).  This was followed by having a successful marriage (30%) and helping others in need (21%).  Least important were having a high paying career (15%), having lots of free time (9%), and becoming famous (1%). Read more at pewresearch.org/millennials.

The Millenials' want to find personal satisfaction in their careers.  Having a close network of friends is very important to them.  They are not very interested in beauty, fame, or fortune.  So far, this generation sounds pretty impressive to me.
