Dear Friends,
Welcome to the first edition of Conexión de Comunidad. We couldn't imagine a better time than Spring to begin something new. We're excited about a lot that's new at Consejo - from our new leader with new energy, to new strategies for sharing our successes with our community. But the real stories of new beginnings are those of our clients - the people we witness choose new hope and new possibility every day. This Spring, we celebrate the courage and conviction of domestic violence survivors like Maria. Thank you for joining us.

Maria's Story
Maria came to Consejo to work with a Domestic Violence (DV) advocate after many years of physical and sexual abuse. As a child she was a witness to domestic violence. She saw her father control her mother through consistent criticism of everything her mother did, manipulation and telling her she was ugly, fat and stupid.

A Safe Place to Go
On a single day in Washington State last fall, 556 domestic violence survivors were turned away from emergency shelters or transitional housing. That's three times the number of survivors turned away exactly one year earlier. When a survivor makes the courageous choice to move her family to safety, it is essential she has someplace safe to go.
