Strategic Planning Meeting

The Results are In!

Jay VogtThe Falmouth Housing Trust launched an on-line Strategic Planning survey for the Falmouth community in April.  At the close of the survey in mid-May close to 100 individuals participated in providing FHT with their feedback.  Respondents were asked to evaluate how they think FHT is doing, what they do well, what they could do better, and to share any additional information or data.

The survey results were compiled and used by the Trust Board of Directors with guest participants on Sunday, June 10th in a full-day retreat and visioning session.  Representatives from the Falmouth Human Services Committee, the Falmouth Housing Authority, the Board of Selectmen, the Commuity Preservation Committee, the local business community, and the Affordable Housing Committee joined the FHT Board of Directors to participate in the retreat, facilitated by Jay Vogt of Peoplesworth.

In the next several weeks the data will be compiled and drafted into a working document by the FHT Board of Directors.  Look for periodic updates and our final Strategic Plan this fall.

The costs associated with the June 10 retreat were under-written by the New Balance Falmouth Road Race.  The funding for facilitator, Jay Vogt, came from a Technical Assistance Program grant from Barnstable County.

Flynn House Gets NEW Windows!

Capital Improvements Update

Our Flynn House new replacement windows have literally brightened our residents lives!  Their symmetry and pane configuration is in keeping with historic Victorian architectural features of the house.  The ease with which they open and close, and can be cleaned is truly beautiful - that is the word that best describes them.

the Gerald Flynn House

We, at the Falmouth Housing Trust, are very appreciative to the Center for Community Recovery Innovations, a program of MassHousing, for the funding that made our window replacement project a reality!  On Tuesday, June 26th we welcomed CCRI Program Director, Ed Chase, and summer intern, Courtney Coleman, for a site visit.

To date the Gerald Flynn House has had its southern-facing roof replaced, a new exterior rear door installed, two bathroom ventiliation systems have been replaced, seven bedrooms have been painted and refurbished, two bedrooms have had carpeting replaced, and two bedrooms have had hardwood floors refinished.  The capital improvements have been made possible through grant support from the Austin Foundation, the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation, the Herb Willet Fund of the Cape Cod Foundation, the Kelley Foundation, the Woods Hole Foundation, and the CCRI / MassHousing grant award totalling over $50,000!

The Gerald Flynn House is FULL with seven tenants in various stages of early recovery from substance abuse and one resident House Manager living on the property.  We have two individuals wait-listed for residency, with no forseeable vacancies.

Annual Membership Appeal
Letters are in the Mail!

The Falmouth Housing Trust launched its 2012 - 2013 annual membership drive last week.  We have a modest goal, compared to many of our fellow non-profits, and that is to raise $7,500 in membership funds this year.

Our membership is modeled after many non-profit organizations and essentially gets you a voice and a vote at our Annual Meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 6th at the Falmouth Yacht Club from 5:30 - 8pm

There are two other critical elements of the Annual Membership Drive; first we depend on your financial support to do what we do which is to preserve, promote, and produce affordable housing opportunities for low to moderate income working Falmouth familes!  To that end we at the Falmouth Housing Trust:

  • monitor all our deed-restricted housing and report to the Town and State annually
  • provide home-owners with referrals and counseling,
  • handle re-sales of deed-restricted affordable units and qualify home-owners as income eligible,
  •  provide outreach and education to the Falmouth community about affordable housing,
  • house seven vulnerable individuals who either are recovering from mental illness or substance abuse - or both - at our Gerald Flynn House program, operated as a drug-free, supervised, sober house for homeless individuals through a collaborative effort with the Falmouth Housing Authority and the Gosnold Treatment Center.

The second crucial element of the Falmouth Housing Trust's membership is our strength in numbers!  It is often quite persuasive when working with our local, county, and state elected officials.  It gives us clout to state we are 500 members strong committed to keeping Falmouth affordable for regular, middle-class, moderate income people!

Our goal this year is $7,500 - please help us reach it!  If you haven't done so yet, please take a minute to support us with a credit card, at the link below, on our web site, www.FalmouthHousingTrust.org, or download a membership form from that same site, and mail in your membership check today.

Thank you!

2012 Bruce Espey Community Service Award

Call For Nominations!

Bob & Judy Murray
Bob & Judy Murray accept the third annual Bruce Espey Community Service Award

The Falmouth Housing Trust is accepting nominations for the fourth annual Bruce Espey Community Service Award, given to a person who has made a significant positive contribution in the promotion and creation of affordable housing for the residents of the Town of Falmouth through their professional and volunteer contributions in the areas of:

       leadership,

     community and civic affairs,

     participation in charitable programs,

     educational programs and advocacy

Of particular interest to the Nominating Committee this year is widening our net. Nominations can include those not living in Falmouth, and both volunteers and professionals who have made strides in the creation of affordable housing, both home-ownership or rental opportunities, as long as the benefit was for the residents of Town of Falmouth, Massachusetts.

Nominations must be received by the close of business on Friday, August 17th.  Letters of support may accompany completed nomination forms as deemed relevant by the person making the nomination, and certainly those can be very persuasive when evaluating candidates.

The Falmouth Housing Trust Board of Directors established the Bruce Espey Community Service Award in July of 2009, following Mr. Espey's death.

To download a nomination form click here or contact the office, 508-540-2370, to request a hard-copy by mail.

The presentation of the Bruce Espey Community Service Award will be made during the Falmouth Housing Trust's Annual Meeting, scheduled for Thursday, September 6th from 5:30pm until 8:00pm at the Falmouth Yacht Club.  Your nominee must be present to receive the award in person.
