Success Story: Meet Richard! |
 | | Gerald Flynn House |
Meet Richard: He moved into the Gerald Flynn House in August of 2010. Richard was born with hydrocephalus, commonly called water on the brain. Because of neurological impairments Richard uses crutches and a wheelchair. Intellectually Richard is smart as a whip and excelled academically, but began drinking to "fit-in" while in college. Richard's casual drinking quickly escalated, resulting in alcoholism and chronic depression.
While in residence at the Flynn House, Richard has received the support he needs to build life skills necessary for independent living; his ultimate goal! The Flynn House's on-site House Management provides Richard with tools to combat his addiction. The location of the House allows Richard to get to where he needs to go; an AA meeting, Falmouth Hospital for physical therapy, or Walmart where he now works as a manager in customer service!
When asked if not for Flynn House, where would he live, he stated, "I would probably be living in a nursing home again, without any quality of life, totally dependent on others. Here I am independent. I receive regular support from my case manager and house-mates. They give me empathy not sympathy. I don't want sympathy. Substance abuse, like being disabled, isn't a question of morality or choice; it is a question of wellness and acceptance so you can live the best life you can."

| Annual Membership Appeal | |
As of the writing of this newsletter on July 26th - we have raised a total of $1,960.00 in our annual membership appeal. Our membership is modeled after many non-profit organizations and essentially your membership gets you a voice and a vote at our Annual Meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 29th at the Falmouth Yacht Club from 5:30 - 8pm.
There are two other critical elements of the Annual Membership Drive! First we depend on your financial support to do what we do which is to preserve, promote, and produce affordable home-ownership opportunities for low to moderate working Falmouth families! To that end we at the Falmouth Housing Trust:
- monitor all our deed-restricted units and report to the Town and State annually
- provide home-owners with referrals and counseling,
- handle re-sales of deed-restricted affordable units and qualify home-owners as income eligible,
- provide outreach and education to the Falmouth community about affordable housing,
- house seven vulnerable individuals who either are recovering from mental illness or substance abuse - or both - at our Gerald Flynn House program, operated as a drug-free, supervised, sober house for homeless individuals through a collaborative effort with the Falmouth Housing Authority and the Gosnold Treatment Center.
The second crucial element of the Falmouth Housing Trust's membership is our strength in numbers! It is often quite persuasive when working with our local, county, and state elected officials. It gives us clout to state we are 500 members strong committed to keeping Falmouth affordable for regular, middle-class, moderate income people!
Our goal this year is $7,500 - please help us reach it! If you haven't done so yet, please take a minute to support us with a credit card, at the link below, on our web site, www.FalmouthHousingTrust.org, or download a membership form from that same site, and mail in your membership check today.
Thank you!

The Call For Nominations for the 2011 Bruce Espey Community Service Award!
|
 | |
Liz & Lee Thompson accept the
Bruce Espey Community Service award in their mother Diane's place, after her death earlier that month. |
The Falmouth Housing Trust is accepting nominations for the 3rd annual Bruce Espey Community Service Award, given to a person who has made a significant positive contribution in the promotion and creation of affordable housing for the residents of the Town of Falmouth through their professional and volunteer contributions in the areas of:
● leadership,
● community and civic affairs,
● participation in charitable and non-profit programs,
● educational programs and advocacy
Of particular interest to the Nominating Committee this year is widening our net. Nominations can include those not living in Falmouth, and both volunteers and professionals who have made strides in the creation of affordable housing; both affordable home-ownership or rental opportunities, as long as the benefit was for the residents of Town of Falmouth, Massachusetts.
Nominations must be received by the close of business on Friday, August 19th. Letters of support may accompany completed nomination forms as deemed relevant by the person making the nomination, and certainly those can be very persuasive when evaluating candidates.
The Falmouth Housing Trust Board of Directors established the Bruce Espey Community Service Award in July of 2009, following Mr. Espey's death.
In 2002 Mr. Espey became a member of the Falmouth Housing Trust and was elected to serve on the Board of Directors until 2008, when he retired from the board. During his tenure as a Trust board member Mr. Espey made important contributions to the Gerald Flynn House, a 7-bed supervised sober house owned and operated by the Falmouth Housing Trust through a collaborative relationship with the Falmouth Housing Authority and the Gosnold Treatment Center.
To download a nomination form click here or go to the Trust's web page, www.FalmouthHousingTrust.org, or contact the office, 508-540-2370, to request a hard-copy by mail.
The presentation of the Bruce Espey Community Service Award will be made during the Falmouth Housing Trust's Annual Meeting, scheduled for Thursday, September 29th from 5:30pm until 8:00pm at the Falmouth Yacht Club. Your nominee must be present to receive the award in person! A reception will follow the presentation and guests will be entertained by live music! |
