Exercise for Success

All the research indicates that making exercise an indispensable part of your daily routine is imperative to staying healthy, not only physically, but also emotionally and spiritually. According to a UC Irvine study, "Getting more exercise, spending time outdoors and helping others are among the activities that can be as effective as drugs or counseling in treating an array of mental illnesses, including depression and anxiety." (Source) If exercise and altruism can help people with serious issues like depression and anxiety, imagine what they can do to alleviate normal stress and the garden-variety bad mood! Read On

Summer Water Safety

Summertime means pool time for many kids and adults, and as they venture to their favorite spots to swim, play and create lasting memories, the YMCA OF GREATER SPARTANBURG reminds swimmers to practice safety when in or around the water.
Practice these water safety tips this summer:
  • Only swim when and where there is a lifeguard on duty; never swim alone.
  • Adults should constantly and actively watch children in and near the water. If multiple adults are in the vicinity, designate a "water watcher" so everyone knows who is on duty.
  • Inexperienced swimmers should wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket when in, on or around the water.
  • Parents or guardians of children who are non-swimmers or beginning level swimmers should be in the water and within arm's reach of their child.
  • Children and adults should not engage in breath holding activities in the water.
Membership News

Congratulations to Joan Ashmore, Middle Tyger YMCA June member of the month!

Members of the month are selected each month through a random selection process. Members' names are entered into the drawing each time they use the facility and swipe their membership card. A designated spot at the front of the parking lot is reserved for our member of the month, so be sure to come often and swipe your card every time.

Healthy Living: Making Exercise a Priority

Even with the best intentions, many people struggle to make exercise a regular part of their existence. With work and family obligations, finding the time to fit in even a 30 minute workout can be a real challenge, and sticking with it can be even harder, but many of our members have lived an active lifestyle for a number of years. "I come to the YMCA because it keeps me feeling good; I had a very weak back before I started coming to the Y, and now it's fine," says Mary Lou, 75, a YMCA OF GREATER SPARTANBURG long-time member. For Mary Lou and her husband, getting their workout in early is the key. "Starting the morning with a workout sets you up for a good day, and makes the next day possible," according to Mary Lou.

Overcoming Inertia

Steve Wilson, Facilities Director at the Middle Tyger Y, likes to quote Newton's law of inertia which essentially states that a body in motion stays in motion and a body at rest stays at rest until an external force acts upon it. Objects tend to resist change, and so do people.

Overcoming the inertia of a sedentary lifestyle isn't easy, so let the Y be your external force.

  • Ask a fitness attendant for some encouragement.
  • Make a new friend in a group fitness class and promise you'll see them next time.
  • Get to know the member service staff.

Making connections is the best way to ensure that your new fitness routine sticks, and once you're in motion, you'll be unstoppable!
