Start school of on the healthy foot.
Back to school! It's the 3 dreaded words the kids strongly dislike hearing. But soon enough they'll be back in the swing of things. What else could be back in the swing of things? That's right the cold and flu viruses. School is the perfect breeding ground for such bacteria and viruses to run rampant. The close quarters and air quality conditions allow them to thrive at your child's expense. So instead of sitting back and waiting for you child to get sick, be proactive and get your child's immune system in shape before the little "buggers" get comfy in your kid.
The most important thing to do is to teach your child to wash his or her hands and avoid putting the fingers in their mouth. The majority of germs are passed while touching others and sharing food, toys or school supplies. If you teach them to wash their hands before touching their food, you've won half the battle.
The second is to make you children water lovers. Water flushes the system and makes it really difficult for bacteria/viruses to set up shop. It's also a great alternative to the juices that are usually high in sugar. Sugar actually helps keep bacteria alive. It decreases the white blood cell count (fighter cells), the immune systems first response to fighting off bacteria and viruses.
Next is to make sure your child gets enough sleep. Sleep is the number one supporter of the immune system and the one that's most easily lost. A child ranging from age 6-11 needs to get between 10-12 hours of sleep per night and a child over the age of 12 should be getting 8-10 hours. Proper sleep aids the immune system and keeps it strong to fight off the unwanted "buggers".
Make sure your children get the vitamins they need for healthy growth and immune system function. Look for foods high in Vitamins A, D, E, and C. Probiotics are a necessity and can be introduced in low sugar yogurts or supplements. Finally, Omega - 3 fatty acids are super important for brain development and healthy brain function.
Lastly, let's not forget the absolute, most important thing. Get your child's spines checked for subluxations. Subluxations can put interference on the body's nervous system, which is ultimately responsible for your immune system function. A nervous system that is interference-free insures a healthy, properly functioning immune system!
Here's to a happy school year for all the kids!!!!
