Dear (Contact First Name)

This month we are focusing on the children.

Those of us who have children are most likely spending more time with them and perhaps observing habits of theirs that are not stellar.  One habit that seems to be prevalent is improper  posture.  I blame technology for the increase in adolescent postural deterioration.  More than ever our youth spend hours in front of video games, television, computer screens and are bent forward texting on tiny cell phones.  The days of our children going out in neighborhoods and playing with other children is being replaced with various electronic devices. Technology is not only affecting the next generations posture, but interpersonal skills as well.  The social networking phenomena is unfortunately becoming a daily ritual for our kids.  Unfortunate this activity gives rise to increased inactivity and inadequate body positioning.  When we see our children hunched over computers and phones it generates parental frustration.  We may tell them to sit up and stop slouching.  Yes that works for a few minutes and then its back to business as usual.  A few helpful hints would include having the children sit on a large exercise ball when they are using the computer or in front of the television gaming.  Sitting on the ball prevents poor posture and strengthens important paraspinal musculature.  Also have the children lie over the ball face-up for one minute in a reversed arched position to offset the forward posture.  Another posture enhancer would be having them retract their shoulder blades for a sixty second count three times per day.  Specific chiropractic adjustments help restore proper posture and prevent further deterioration as well.  Proper posture helps our body stay healthier and allows internal organs and nerves to work more efficiently.  When posture is poor it places unnecessary pressure on the spine and the major organs located in the front of the body (heart, lungs, colon).  As you sit reading this article, slouch forward and feel the pressure that generates on the anterior part of your body and the spine.  Please realize that poor posture can be caused by other conditions too,  such as scoliosis or congenital defects.  As the children get ready to head back to school, consider a comprehensive spinal evaluation to prevent postural deficiencies or assist a child in reversing poor posture and improper body mechanics. Also, consider limiting activities that promote poor posture and assist your kids in becoming more active.  Next time you visit our office ask one of us for an exercise booklet that will not only help the children, but you as well.

4 Steps to Safe Backpack Use

Step 1:  Choose Right - Choosing the right size backpack is the most important step to safe backpack use

Tip:  Bring a friend to help measure your backpack properly

Step 2:  Pack Right - The max weight of loaded pack shouldn't exceed 15% of your body weight, so pack only what is needed

Tip:  If the backpack forces the wearer to move forward to carry, it's overloaded

Step 3:  Lift right - Face the pack, bend at the knees - use both hands and check the weight of pack - lift with the legs - apply one shoulder strap and then the other

Tip:  Don't sling the pack on one shoulder

Step 4:  Wear right - Use both shoulder straps - snug but not tight

Tip:  When the pack has a waist strap, use it

Parents, please teach your kids how to wear their backpacks and check their bags on a daily basis to make sure it's not too heavy for them.
