Track Calories Burned, Miles Ridden and CO2 Saved While Riding CaBiStarting today, for each trip you take, you can review your total distance, calories burned and carbon footprint reduction! We have also added an advanced calorie calculator that can be adjusted for each individual rider. Users can review a running total of these metrics for their last 200 trips.
An explanation of how each metric is determined is also included in a link at the top right corner of your rental history page, titled, "How We Calculate These Numbers" (right underneath the "Try the Advanced Calorie Calculator" link). We hope you enjoy these new features and use them as motivation to keep biking. Happy riding!

Member of the Month
Our Capital Bikeshare Member of the Month, Larry M., is a solutions man. We like that. When the responsibilities of parenthood dragged him away from his beloved bicycle-commuting habits-- with morning school drop-offs, conjugal carpooling and the like-did Larry curl up in a fetal position and curse his fate? No. No, he did not. He became a Capital Bikeshare member instead. Since November, 2010, Larry has been making use of Capital Bikeshare at least twice a day throughout the work week, both for meetings and to "commute from downtown to the bus stop at the bottom of the big hill." You know. The big hill. With the bus stop. Read on for more about Larry-the-Dad-Who-Overcame-Children-and-Hills-to-Ride-Again.

Come Celebrate Our First Birthday!Capital Bikeshare is turning one! That's right, it was just a year ago on September 20 that the District Department of Transportation and Arlington County launched the largest bikesharing program in the US. DC area residents, commuters and visitors welcomed the program with much fanfare, and we're happy to admit that its success has surpassed our wildest expectations. We can't wait to celebrate with you on Sept. 22 at the official Capital Bikeshare Birthday Bash. It's going to be the party of the season with food, drinks, live music from 80's band The Reflex, moonbounces and other silly-awesome games and fun. For complete details, see the invitation on goDCgo.com.

Spotcycle Tip: Make sure that your Spotcycle app has the most up to date information on available bikes and docks by pressing the refresh button on the app's main screen. You can set your smartphone to automatically refresh Spotcycle data, but it does drain your battery more quickly. For iPhone users, open Spotcycle and go to the "More" tab, then the "Settings" tab to change your refresh settings. For Android users, go to the "Settings" tab.

CaBi Members Unite on Car Free Day
We're still a month out from Car Free Day on Sept. 22, but there's no time like the present to make a commitment to do something you were probably already going to do anyway. At last count, people who have taken the pledge to celebrate international Car Free Day locally was up to 617, and the goal this year in the DC region is 10,000. If we could get everyone in the Capital Bikeshare community to take the pledge to go car free or car-lite, we could reach that goal and then some. Help us show the world that the people of DC mean business when it comes to embracing a culture of multimodal transportation and reduced reliance on motor vehicles. Then come out and celebrate Car Free Day at the Capital Bikeshare Birthday Bash. It's a big, crazy day of celebrating stuff! Click here to take the pledge and become eligible for lots of great prizes.

In the Spotlight: Boston's Hubway
A crowd of hundreds gathered on July 28 at Government Center in Boston to celebrate the official launch of Hubway, Boston's new bikesharing program. Mayor Thomas Menino officially introduced Hubway, touting the environmental, health and traffic reduction benefits of bicycling and remarking, "The car is no longer king in Boston." Membership at the time of launch already numbered over 700 people, eager to take advantage of the 600 bicycles and 61 stations and continues to grow steadily. As of August 9, membership had shot up to 1,726 members and 14,476 rides had been logged within the two-week period.
Like Capital Bikeshare, Hubway is managed by Alta and operates in much the same way as Capital Bikeshare-even the website looks the same. Expect to pay slightly more for an annual membership which costs $85 regularly. If you're visiting Boston for a short stay, you can also opt for a daily pass for $5 or a 3-day pass for $12.
We look forward to learning more soon about the growth and success of yet another US bikesharing program. It's exciting to see them springing up everywhere, and we hope that Bostonians will embrace it as enthusiastically as we have here in the DC region.
