Capital Bikeshare is Expanding

Bikes

We are working hard to bring Capital Bikeshare to more locations.  The latest detail to go along with this press release is that four new stations will be installed in the Rosslyn and Courthouse areas in mid March.  Many more stations will follow later in the year in D.C. and Arlington.  We will keep you posted as plans are finalized.  Click here for more information on bringing Capital Bikeshare to your location through station sponsorship.

Surprise Update to Winter Weather Warrior Contest

The competition to be crowned Capital Bikeshare's Winter Weather Warrior is heatingWinterWeatherWarrior up in the uniquely designed streets of the District and Arlington. To date, we've given out prizes to three winners in random drawings, as well as to the winners of January's "Longest Haul," "Most Saddle Time" and photo contest. After obsessively poring over the results of our top ten leaders each week, we finally had a light bulb moment: let's give prizes to everyone in the top ten! Because really, do bragging rights for third place make up for peddling around in sub-freezing temperatures? Here's what they'll get:

2nd Place: A one-year extension of your Capital Bikeshare membership and a $50 gift card to Starbucks

3rd Place: A one-year extension of your Capital Bikeshare membership

4th Place: A seven-month extension of your Capital Bikeshare membership

5th Place: A six-month extension of your Capital Bikeshare membership

Are you starting to see a pattern here?

6th Place: A five-month extension of your Capital Bikeshare membership

7th Place: A four-month extension of your Capital Bikeshare membership

8th Place: A three-month extension of your Capital Bikeshare membership

9th Place: A two-month extension of your Capital Bikeshare membership

10th Place: A one-month extension of your Capital Bikeshare membership

So, if any of you warriors are concerned about a certain individual who seems to be hovering in first place, keep on rolling!

In the Spotlight: DecoBike - Miami Beach

Capital Bikeshare has received much acclaim since launching in September, 2010, and while we love the attention, we have to acknowledge that there are other bikeshare systems out there-and other cities are just as excited as we are to have them. We'd like to feature one of those other systems to give you some perspective and let you know what to expect if you plan to do a little traveling. This month, we chose to feature Miami Beach's DecoBike because it's slated to debut in March (we also thought the warm, beachy pictures with scantily clad models on their website would be a refreshing change for all the Winter Warriors out there). Let's take a look, shall we? Here are some tidbits on how the DecoBike system works:

  • DecoBike offers hourly, daily, three- or five-day passes and monthly memberships, unlike Capital Bikeshare, which offers a yearly membership but no hourly rentals.DecoBike Logo
  • Similar to Capital Bikeshare, DecoBike will offer 1,000 bikes at 100 solar-powered stations.
  • DecoBike markets their bikesharing program aggressively as a "green" initiative.
  • DecoBike runs exclusively in Miami Beach, NOT in downtown Miami. So don't even think about crossing the bridge or causeway, because the DecoBike police will run you down and charge you with a felony.
  • You must be 18 to ride a DecoBike, as opposed to 16 for Capital Bikeshare. (and, by the way, you're fair game for police to pull over if you appear to be underage!)

All in all, it looks like Miami Beach's bikesharing program is off to a good start with lots of press coverage and an increasing number of social media followers. We wish Miami Beach DecoBike the same success that Capital Bikeshare has enjoyed!

New at Capital Bikeshare:

Ask and you shall receive. We now offer local area maps for the Capital Bikeshare system in a printable format.  Check out our website and select "download a printable map". Next, choose your station location from 10 different area maps. Scroll down, click on your area, and print! Easy right? As it turns out, it's not so easy reading a map while riding a bike. So stay safe and stop to read the map while planning your route.

"I came across a couple CaBi maintenance guys while pulling a bike at 14th & G yesterday afternoon. They noticed and were curious about the heated motorcycle riding jacket I was wearing, and were sociable and professional. I think it's totally cool that they ride trailer equipped bicycles with the equipment they need to perform maintenance. It's also nice that they are bike enthusiasts themselves. CaBi is turning out to be an awesome bike share system."
