Greetings!
It's March! Whoa, spring is just around the corner. We can't wait for the warmer weather (although here in Des Moines, you have to admit, our winter hasn't been that bad). Spring time means get ready to gear up for some of our fun FREE workouts in the Pappajohn Sculpture Park! You remember those, don'tcha? Didn't participate last year? Well, you'll have plenty of opportunities to get in on the fun this year. Stay tuned ... |
| Revised Large Group Class Schedule | | | We heard you & are adjusting the schedule
The Large Group and XPRESS Training schedule has been in place now for some time, and we've figured out what's working and what's not, so we're making some adjustments based on your feedback.
Effective Monday, March, 7, the 5:30 a.m. Interval class will no longer be offered (just not enough of you early birds on Monday morn -- hey, we get it). Also, the second session of the XPRESS Group Training classes, scheduled Monday through Friday from 12:45 p.m. to 1:20 p.m., has not been popular, so those will no longer be offered either.
Finally, due to more than a few requests, the 9 a.m. Zumba class on Tuesdays will now be a TRX class instead!! To see the new schedule, just visit the Schedule & Rates page of the GPS website. |
| March Observances | | |
If you've been with GPS any length of time, chances are your trainer or instructor has said the following words to you: maintaining a healthy weight, or getting to one if you're trying to lose some pounds, is 80 percent nutrition.
Yep, that's right. You can be a maniac in the gym, work out every day and still you won't see much progress on the scale, or be the healthiest you can be, if you are eating the wrong things.
Keep listening to the certified instructors at GPS about how to fuel your body properly, but there's also some really good information for you at the National Nutrition Month website, courtesy of the American Dietetic Association.
National Colorectal Awareness Month
It might not be an easy subject to talk about, but colorectal cancer affects more Americans than necessary, because people are uncomfortable about the tests required to detect this terrible disease. But more than 51,000 people will lose their lives to these cancers this year.
Colon cancer in particular has had an impact on several of our clients and staff. Craig Phinney, a long-time Ankeny police officer and hearty (teddy) bear of a great guy has gone through this tough journey last year, and started the Cops Against Cancer organization to help others. Check it out!
And trainer Rebecca Meyer has had colon cancer affect her father and both grandmothers. She and her family are involved in the the Colon Cancer Coalition's Get Your Rear in Gear 5K fundraising event Oct. 1, 2011. Check it out, too!
National Sleep Awareness Week
Getting a solid night's rest is one of the most important components of healthy living -- it helps fight depression and aids weight loss, among other important benefits. March 7-13 is National Sleep Awareness Week. So here's to getting your zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzs! |
| MuscleGlide Massagers for Sore Body Parts | | |
You've seen them in the studio ... what are they for?
Rollers, rollers everywhere. Big ones, little ones, they seem to be multiplying like rabbits. They're hard to miss, but what is a MuscleGlide massage tool and what's it for?
As you might have guessed, they are used to help loosen up tight, sore muscles, but there's a lot more science involved. You can purchase six-roller and two-roller massagers at GPS for $60. Ask Gigi about them! |
| Trainer's Tip | | |
The Power of H2O
This month's tip serves two purposes. First, you may already know the importance of drinking water throughout the day, but we'd like to emphasize how critical it is for you to hydrate your body properly during exercise.
Our second purpose: we'd like to encourage all our clients to help keep paper out of the landfill and do our little part for the planet by investing in a nice water bottle. Put your name on it and carry it with you everywhere. Pretty soon you won't leave home without it (yeah, we kind of borrowed that famous line). |

Better for you on St. Patty's Day!
One holiday after another that contributes to overeating and drinking. St. Patty's is a doozy. But, thanks to our culinary trainer Tommy "The Food Dude" Boone, here are recipes he found for better-for-you fish and chips and corned beef hash. Eat like an Irishman with none of the regret! Enjoy! |
|
Everyone seems to have a little Irish in them in March. Go ahead and celebrate St. Patrick's Day, but be safe and remember everything is better in moderation (especially the day after).
Sincerely, Gigi, Rodney & the Training Team |
