Before they're allowed to shoot baskets, children enrolled in The North Ward Center's recreation program first have to hit the books.
The after-school tutoring program, designed for students in kindergarten through sixth grades who are struggling in school, was launched in response to parents' demand to put academics before sports.
"We know there is a need for this and it is easier to get their attention now when they are younger," said Rashard Casey, the director of the North Ward Center's Youth Development and Recreation Program. "We are stressing from a young age that academics coincides with athletics."

Verizon New Jersey President Dennis Bone was honored by The North Ward Center at its 11th Annual Gala that raised funds for the expansion of Robert Treat Academy's Central Ward campus.
Adrianne Davis, the executive director of The North Ward Center and the vice president of the board of Robert Treat, said Bone understands the importance of giving back to the community.
"As president of Verizon New Jersey, Dennis has helped to make Newark stronger by supporting programs that build community, educate our youth and elevate the spirit," Davis said.

Father Robert Sandoz, the president of Christ the King Prep School in Newark, was honored by The North Ward Center at its annual Monsignor Geno Baroni awards luncheon.
Sandoz was presented the award by Bill Baroni, the deputy executive director of The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The award is given annually in honor of Monsignor Geno Baroni, a priest and social activist from Washington D.C., who was inspired and helped Stephen N. Adubato Sr. found The North Ward Center in 1970. The event, held Wednesday Nov. 30 in a room at The North Ward Center named after the monsignor, marked the 26th year that the award has been given out.
