Michael Critchley honored at North Ward Center's Irish Breakfast

Michael Critichley Spring Lake 2011Michael Critchley, one of New Jersey's top defense lawyers, was honored by The North Ward Center at its annual Irish Breakfast in Spring Lake.

In honor of Critchley, The North Ward Center donated $10,000 to one of Critchley's favorite charities, Sisters of Christian Charity at Assumption College in Mendham. Guests at the event, held at the Breakers on the Ocean, were also asked to make a voluntary contribution to the organization.

RTA Sailing 2011For sixth-grade students from the Robert Treat Academy in Newark, a day on the Shark River was more than just fun in the sun.

As the classmates assisted one another in mounting and launching kayaks from a floating dock near Belmar's L Street beach, one holding the boat firmly against the bulkhead while the other steadied themselves atop the craft, then handing them their paddle and seeing their friends hit the water, the lesson becomes clear.

They're learning about themselves.

Backpack Giveaway 2011Alisha Gonzalez was like a lot of the Newark parents who came to claim free backpacks and school supplies for her children at The North Ward Center's Family Success Center.

"I'm on a fixed income. It was hard for me to get their uniforms, let alone backpacks and supplies," said the North Ward resident who came with her three children, two of whom attend Rafael Hernandez and a third who is attending a preschool. "It helps out more than people think."

In the span of a few hours, the staff of the Family Success Center handed out nearly 200 backpacks filled with grade appropriate school supplies for Newark school children. Bags for younger children included crayons and colored pencils while older children received notebooks, rulers and calculators.

Robert Treat Academy CSI WinnersThe Benedictine Academy CSI Science Contest held at the all-female Catholic secondary school on Saturday, Oct. 1 brought together a total of 12 teams from seven area elementary schools.

The young student participants spent several hours investigating a staged "crime" and then attempted to solve the mystery surrounding it based upon "clues" provided by the Elizabeth Police Department. Girls in grades 6-8 participated in the event, which featured teams of 3-6 students, guided by a faculty advisor, performing basic crime lab investigations.

Each student team featured an "evidence collector", a "lab technician", an "interviewer", a "sketch artist" and a "photographer". The first place award for solving the "crime" was given to Robert Treat Academy Charter School in Newark. Second place went to Hillside Catholic Academy. Third place was awarded to Holy Spirit R.C. School, Union.
