| | Judge Esther Salas addresses Robert Treat Academy graduates |
Robert Treat Academy is living proof that an "extraordinary education" is possible for all children, state Education Commissioner Chris Cerf told graduates of the Newark charter school.
"Robert Treat represents the incredibly powerful message that it can be done, and it can be done well, and that zip code and birth circumstances and what country your parents happen to be born in are not destiny in this country," Cerf said.
"There are a lot of people who doubt that," Cerf said. "What Robert Treat Academy does is tell people all over the world that a high quality extraordinary education is possible for all children."
Robert Treat graduated its seventh class of eighth graders at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center June 24. Dressed in green and white gowns, the 48 graduates sat on the stage of the Victoria Theater as dignitaries praised them, the school and its founder, Stephen N. Adubato.

Editor's Note: Hector Santiago played in the North Ward Center's baseball program from 2002-06.
| | Hector Santiago |
Hector Santiago sat in his apartment in Birmingham, Ala., around 10 a.m. last Sunday, idling time in the latest minor-league outpost during a career first imagined in Newark's North Ward. "Do you think you can go out of the bullpen tonight?" Bobby Magallanes, asked Santiago, a starter for the Birmingham Barons who recorded a 4.58 ERA and 30 strikeouts in six starts with the club.
"Yeah, man," Santiago replied, with the sense of duty of a 2006 30th-round pick out of Bloomfield Tech who had already clung to five minor-league seasons devoid of the security of a high-round bonus baby.
"Then pack your bags," the Magallanes said. "You're going to Chicago."

More than four dozen children from Newark enjoyed a classic summertime carnival complete with a clown, magician, face painting, popcorn and cotton candy at the North Ward Center's Family Success Center.
The June 29 carnival kicked off a series of free child-friendly events to be held every Wednesday during the summer at the Family Success Center on Mt. Prospect Avenue. Upcoming activities include movie night, jewelry making, Zumba, sewing and arts and crafts.
"Parents are home with their children over the summer and they often don't have anything to do with them," said Vanessa Bohler, the director of the Family Success Center. "We offer a safe and fun environment for children whose parents may not be able to afford to take them to an amusement park or the beach for a day."
