Robert Treat Academy Students Spend Summer on College Campuses

While other children were sleeping in late, playing outside or hanging out with friends this summer, more than 20 students from Robert Treat Academy charter school in Newark were taking advanced courses on college campuses throughout the East Coast.

Each year, dozens of students from Robert Treat attend the three-week Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) program with other highly motivated students from 38 different states and 55 participating countries. This summer, 9,300 middle and high school students took advanced level courses at 25 U.S. locations and one site in Hong Kong.

Students at Robert Treat, a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon school, have an extended year, attending classes for 11 months. Principal Theresa Adubato noted that students who attended the Center for Talented Youth had just one week of vacation this summer.

Robert Treat Academy Students Make Waves on the Shark River

Sixth and seventh graders from Robert Treat Academy in Newark got a chance to get out of the city and set sail on Shark River in Belmar, N.J. this week with the help of the Friends of Belmar Harbor sailing program.

Sailing instructors and volunteers from the program taught the students the basics of sailing, tying ropes and kayaking.
Sixth grade homeroom and math teacher Trish Roemer said the trip is an opportunity for students to get out of the classroom and learn lessons about camaraderie and working together as a group.
