Unfortunately, we must begin on a somber note...

R.I.P. Joe Kubert

We were saddened to learn of the passing of legendary comic creator Joe Kubert. Mr. Kubert passed away this past Sunday, after a brief hospitalization. As many of you know, we were Joe Kubert @ Dewey's photo honored to host a creator appearance by Mr. Kubert, last year on June 4th, 2011 - when this photo was taken. He was a warm, friendly and gracious guest - generous with his time, talents and words. I'll never forget his visit. It's no secret that I've been a fan of Joe Kubert for what seems like forever - ever since I was 11 years old - the day I saw the cover to Brave & Bold #34, the silver age debut of the Hawkman, on the newsstand racks. I remain a fan today. Having him here a Dewey's was a very special day for us here at the store, and for me personally. Thank you again, Mr. Kubert.

Dewey's Comic City first opened its' doors on, Thursday, August 15th, 1991.

But you say "wait, I can do the math. Dewey's opened August 15th, 1991. and that would make Dewey's 21 years old!"

Correct.

And it's not that we forgot or anything... We were just busy. DC's New 52 kicked off last August (just two weeks after our anniversary) and that ran into the fall, and the hype machine that is Dewey's Comic City was rolling along full on in support. Then came Midnight Madness and the holidays. Then a couple of creator appearances Then Free Comic Book Day. Then vacation. The right moment just seemed to slip away on us...

Until we turned up the old RETAILER OF THE MONTH photo as shown in this week's GREAT MOMENTS IN DEWEY'S COMIC CITY HISTORY section (to your right someplace).

Seriously, check out that mustache.

"Maybe we can pull a 20th Anniversary sale out of this anyway," we thought. "Even if it's not actually our 20th.... after all, doing something kinda crazy like this is sort of "the Dewey's way.""

GREAT MOMENTS

It was (over) 20 years ago today, Sgt Pepper taught the band to play... and we kick it off with a GREATEST MOMENT photo that looks at "the way we were," some 20 years ago. I've been having fun over the last couple of months poking some good nature fun at others - I'd thought it only sporting that I turn the tables on myself, and give you all a chance to get back a me. I can take it. I'm old & grumpy.

GREAT MOMENTS IN DEWEY'S COMIC CITY HISTORY #9

Yep, that me. A little more than 20 years. About 75 pounds heavier, funky glasses, and during my "super mario" phase, GM #9 20th Anniversary photo (my super-mario phase) judging by the awesome mustache I was sporting (and thus, our the theme for our anniversary sale)! It was taken at our first location, 4 Park Avenue (in the rear), about a block from where we are now, across from where Atlanta Bread is now, and above what was then Dunne's Hardware.

The image (scanned as best I could) appeared in a Dark Horse consumer promotional publication, the title of which was the Dark Horse INSIDER (hmmm, they clearly stole that from us), sometime in early 1992 (judging by the release date on the title that was being promoted on the reverse). At that time Dark Horse was promoting this publication by offering prizes to readers who wrote in recommending their favorite comic shop. Young Ricky Karowski wrote to Dark Horse, said some very nice stuff about us, our store was chosen the "RETAILER OF THE MONTH" award, and Ricky and his dad, Joe, came by to take the photo [You can check out a copy of the page here].

Ricky was a nice kid. He and his Dad were early customers and friends. Ricky was a BIG fan of the silver age X-MEN book and he pretty much bought most of my personal collection of s/a X-men comics, which I had brought in to the store when we first opened. Ricky has moved away, but I occasionally still see his Dad and last I heard Rick was married with a couple kids of his own. Hope they're X-men fans...

So that's the story behind this photo. 20 years later, and we're still at it. Of course, the truth is that it's actually 21 years later (see the dan-itorial for why). But who's counting, right? It's the Dewey's way, better late than not at all (like a Kevin Smith (remember him) comic.

There are a lot of folks to thank for being a part of any successes we've had these past 21 years. My family of course. All the great folks who have worked here and been a part of TEAM DEWEY'S through the years. And of course, you, our valued customers. We've been fortunate in knowing and calling some great people our customers over the last 21 years.

Don't worry. There's no big announcement here. We're going nowhere. In fact, I fully believe that we just getting started. That the best is still to come!

The GREAT MOMENT for me took place August 15th, 1991. I turned the key on the lock that opened the store for business for the first time.
