KAIROS commits to continue Indigenous Rights work

UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous

Peoples: KAIROS efforts have centred on getting the federal government to endorse this UN Declaration, and securing a commitment to true implementation in genuine collaboration with Indigenous peoples. Much unfinished work remains, including implementation, public awareness, and addressing concerns about how the right of Free, Prior and Informed Consent are being widely ignored by resource extraction industries and governments.

Truth and Reconciliation Commission: KAIROS has focused on the TRC as one crucial means of coming to equity and right relationship, and as both an opportunity and responsibility for non-Indigenous people to listen to their Indigenous neighbours. This work also points to continuing and profound inequities in education and child welfare funding as examples of obstacles to reconciliation.

Bill C-31: Refugee Reform

On June 11th, the government's controversial refugee reform bill passed a third reading in the House of Commons. It now moves to the Senate for approval before becoming law. This may happen before the summer recess.

Ed Wiebe, MCC Canada Refugee Assistance Program Coordinator, shares his reflections in an article on our blog:

Clamping down on refugees: Is Bill C-31 reflecting or shaping Canadian attitudes?

June 20: World Refugee Day

No one chooses to be a refugee.
  • Every minute eight people leave everything behind to escape war, persecution or terror.
  • If conflict threatened your family, what would you do? Stay and risk your lives? Or try to flee, and risk kidnap, rape or torture?
  • For many refugees the choice is between the horrific or something worse.

The United Nations Refugee Agency has action and event resources. You can also join events already planned.

A project of Indigenous Work Program of MCC Canada, MythPerceptions attempts to dismantle stereotypes and misconceptions that people from the dominant culture tend to believe about Indigenous peoples living within the borders of what is now North America.

MythPerceptions attempts to change views in a way that is engaging, yet gives opportunities to dig deeply into some of the issues facing Indigenous peoples.

Staff Update

Earlier this month the MCC Ottawa Office team joined over 70 MCC staff in Akron, Pennsylvania for a three day leadership retreat. It was an exciting opportunity to meet new colleagues, reconnect with current ones, and engage with international program leaders as we all work to to implement new ways of collaborating within the new structure of MCC.
