Grappling with Canada's Mining Policies
As MCC Canada is well into the third and final year of its Mining Justice Campaign, the Ottawa Office continues to advocate for greater accountability in the extractives sector. In the past, our political engagement has included support for relevant legislative initiatives such as Bill C-300. Beyond such legislation, however, there are other ways to engage the Government of Canada on issues of corporate social responsibility (CSR). In 2009, the federal government introduced a four-pillared CSR strategy, aimed at improving the competitive advantage of Canadian extractive companies operating abroad.
 

In light of the widely-criticized inadequacies of this CSR strategy, concerned civil society groups continue to advocate for mining justice in a myriad of ways, including legal work on behalf of mining-affected communities; advocating for stronger industry rules around revenue transparency; and strengthening corporate adherence to the range of CSR mechanisms, initiatives, and guidelines that exist around the world. Read more

Tim Schmucker, Public Engagement Coordinator
Since beginning his assignment in January, Tim has been framing and forming the new MCC Canada Public Engagement Network, revamping the Ottawa Office's social and electronic media strategies, and coordinating a high level partner delegation from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. 
 
He's also greatly enjoying the Ottawa Office's team spirit!
