Commissioner's Corner

Lisa DiGiacinto, CHRVA Commissioner

Preparation for the upcoming indoor season is well underway with exciting new developments in the way we train our scorers and officials. The Board of Directors should be commended on managing the cost of running the region and for keeping the membership fees the same for another year.  Speaking of membership, you must renew your membership for the 2013 season by October 31, 2012.  (Read the full article for more important information about the upcoming season.)

Also, we had a great 2012 Outdoor Junior season!  We invite you to take a moment to read our summer wrap-up which includes pictures of all winners.

2012 Fellowship Season

As you assemble your teams for the coming indoor season, you will also want to think about CHRVA practice tournaments called Fellowships. Fellowships give teams an opportunity to "audition" new players without having to make a season-long commitment, but most important, they are the Region's only vehicle for training and certifying new referees and scorekeepers. If you have players on your team who plan to become certified officials, they will need to attend the appropriate referee and/or scorekeeper clinic(s) and then attend one or two Fellowships in order to get rated or trained.

Believe it or not it's that time again to start getting ready for the upcoming USAV season and this time we have a significant change to deal with. In case you haven't already heard, liberos will now be allowed to serve. For those of you familiar with NCAA rules, the procedures CHRVA will be using will be very similar. The complete rule is posted on the referee page of CHRVA website.

From the Scorer's Table

Scorers, please note the new libero "serve" rule.  Also, if you are new to scoring and plan to score at adult tournaments, you must complete the process by November 30.  If you are a Provisional or Regional scorer, you must be complete the process by December 31.  Because of the significant scoring changes, ALL SCORERS and referees are required to watch the scoring clinic this year.

Juniors Make a Statement in Iowa
Charles Ezigbo
, Junior Girls Program Director

The Chesapeake indoor High Performance (HP) teams are starting to receive the national recognition it rightfully deserves at the National HP Championships. At this year's event in West Des Moines Iowa, despite entering the tournament seeded 14th and 16th, the CHRVA Youth (15/16 age group) and Select (13/14 age group) teams concluded the tournament on a very positive note. While the Youth team brought home the Silver medal by finishing 2nd in their division, the Select group managed to make its best showing ever at this event by finishing in 9th place!
