Thanks to everyone who voted in our Spring Elections and congratulations to our new and returning Board members! Also, congratulations to Dixie Collins, the CHRVA Scoring Chair, for recently receiving the Edward P. Lauten Scorekeeper's Service Award. In other news, CHRVA has partnered once again with local volleyball groups to offer juniors outdoors doubles this summer, and starting this coming season a change in adult rules will allow the libero to serve. Sitting Volleyball Featured in Citibank Ads Dixie Collins
(Dixie Collins is an assistant coach for the USA Men's National Sitting Team as well as the CHRVA Scorer Chair.) If you are like me, I usually surf for other shows during commercials. But recently I happened to catch Kari Miller, the libero for the Women's National Sitting Volleyball Team, featured in a Citibank TV commercial. Miller, who is from Washington, D.C., will participate in the Paralympic Games in London August 29-September 9.

| From the Ladder (Indoor and Outdoor)
Bryan Strong, Officials Chair
By and large it was a quiet season, but let's take a minute to review a couple of important things: handling abnormal substitutions; referee certifications this fall; and potential rule changes regarding liberos for the upcoming season. Click here for more info. Certified Beach/Outdoor Referees NeededAs outdoor volleyball evolves as a sport, the need for outdoor officials grows. The region has worked hard this season to add sand/outdoor play for adults and juniors. Sand volleyball in the NCAA is an emerging sport that's experiencing big growth. Once enough schools add sand volleyball to their programs, it will then become a varsity sport. CHRVA is interested in conducting training and certification each year to build a roster of certified beach referees. If you would like more information about becoming a certified beach referee, please email Rebecca Johannes, CHRVA Beach Referee Chair.

Juniors - Girls and High Performance Updates
Charles Ezigbo, Junior Girls Program Director Congratulations to those athletes who were selected to both the CHRVA High Performance Regional teams as well as those selected to participate on a USA High Performance team or invited to a USA High Performance camp. Without our region, we had a record turnout at tryouts. Click here for more details. And congratulations to all junior girls' teams competing this past season! 359 teams participated in regionals this past spring. The champions of each age group's Open Division will be going to USAV Nationals to compete in the National Division while the runner-ups in the Open Division will compete in the American Division. Click here to see who is going to USAV Nationals. |
Juniors - Boys News
Rob Lewandowski, Boys Program Director Regionals were held at the end of March in the 14's, 15's, 16's, 17's, and 18's divisions. We are continuing to work on ways to promote the sport within the region, especially involving the younger boys. The Boys' Directors are planning on meeting via phone conference in the next month or two to discuss the season and some areas we can work on to improve:
- Organizing our schedule and creating tournament dates early
- Involving and attracting more middle school players
- Attempting to increase the number of clubs, especially in areas of the Region were we typically haven't had teams (Southern Maryland, Eastern Shore)
We are continuing to ask our girls' clubs to help us continue to promote the sport with their teams and families - brothers, cousins, boyfriends, or anyone involved with their program! Please contact me with any questions. |
For Adults
Julie Briggs, CHRVA President
I'd like to thank several staff members without whom the adult program would not be possible. Also, I am looking for people who are eager to work on the Adult Program Task Force this summer as well as individuals who would like to work on marketing our men's program to bring more teams into the fold. Click here for more details.
And last but not least, click here to view adults regional results from this past season.

Dear Dr. Digs
Dr. Digs confirms that adult tournaments are offered on the same days as juniors outdoor doubles tournaments and encourages parents to play. Also, the good doctor addresses the issue of why a teammate might "dump" the ball versus setting a player.
