Commissioner's Corner

Lisa DiGiacinto, CHRVA Commissioner

It's hard to believe that the summer of 2011 is coming to a close. We had an exciting CHRVA summer with more than 60 junior teams competing in our summer tournaments. Congrats to all of the participants and to Fairfax Volleyball Club and Mid-Atlantic Volleyball (MAV) for hosting our tournaments. Next year we will start our CHRVA junior series to compete for the title of CHRVA junior outdoor champion. Look for more information next year!

From the Ladder

Bryan Strong, Officials Chair

A new season is beginning, so as usual there are a bunch of things to talk about and go over.

First, some announcements. Congratulations to Les Deason, the newest National Official in the Chesapeake Region. Well done! Also, Rebecca Johannes has been appointed as the Assistant Referee Chair. She will help us get everything done.

Next is a review of what everyone needs to do to maintain their referee and scorekeeper certifications. If you have ANY question about what your current certifications are, you can refer to the information in the database at http://webpoint.usavolleyball.org. Current and past certifications are listed in your information. Remember: You cannot be a referee if you are not a scorekeeper.

From the Scorer's Table
Dixie Collins, Scorer Chair

Did you notice the difference in the terminology? Once again we are adjusting to slight changes, one of which is the term we use to refer to the person who keeps score. Now we are scorers instead of scorekeepers. You will see the new terminology in the new DCR. This is the year that the books come out for the two year period 2011-2013. You can access the current rules at www.usavolleyball.org.

Volleyball After 50?  You Bet!

As of mid-2011 there were 185 players registered in the "Over 50" age bracket in the CHRVA region.  And some of our "seasoned" players even went to the National Senior Olympics in Houston earlier this year.

Dear Dr. Digs

Dr. Digs took the summer off from writing so he could take a long vacation and check out all of the volleyball camps in the area. (He might have actually attended some if they didn't start so early in the morning and refuse to give free admission to would-be comedy writers.) But now it's back to school, back to volleyball and back to writing for the illustrious Digs.
