From the President
Welcome to the new and improved Digs newsletter. From now on you will receive your Digs newsletter via email. Previous issues of Digs will still be available to you in PDF format on the CHRVA website. This new format allows us to provide more information, more often, and most important, because there are fewer steps to publication, the information will be timely. As with all email newsletters, you are given the option to opt out. If you choose that, please note that you will not receive any other emailed Digs, with the exception of the issue that is devoted to the Board election. According to the CHRVA Bylaws, all members must receive the ballot and voting instructions.
I would like to thank everyone who ran for office and congratulate the incumbents -- Bree Seeger, Rob Baily, Rob Lewandowski, and Christie May -- and the new members -- Ed Tucholski, Jackie Krampf, and Barry Goldberg. I would also like to thank the outgoing Board Members for their years of service: Rick Duntz and Steve Lenderman, but most especially Wanda Hsiung for more than 20 years of service to the region. Your hard work was very much appreciated.
While all of you have been taking the summer off and/or playing outdoors, your Board and Staff have been hard at work on plans for new projects and implementing new things from the National Office. Webpoint will have a few new options to make registration easier. We convened an Adult Program Task Force to offer suggestions to the Board for changes that will encourage more participation. AAVO met to solidify the procedures for certification. The National Office is offering its support to regions that start an outdoor program for Juniors. The Board voted to include that program for next summer, but we need to start work on the program now.
AAVO
- Junior certified Referees will now only need to complete one rating.
- Adult certified Player Refs will now only need to complete one rating every other year in addition to taking and passing the test every year.
- Provisional Referees are still required to pass the test and two ratings during the season every year.
- Regionals and above must pass the test and get their ratings, but are also required to give a full day or two half days to rating at Fellowships; teach a clinic; and work at Regionals.
ALL referees must maintain their scorekeeping status. This info will be posted on the Officials page of the website.
Good news...no new rules for the coming season!
The National Office has decided that there needs to be more focus on getting the adults to play and play more often. In order to do that, they are allowing the regions to loosen their rules.
-
The National Office is allowing regions to set their own uniform rules as long as the jersey rules are followed. That means that as long as the team jerseys are identical, the players can wear any bottoms they want including any mix of shorts, spandex, and pants in any color or style. Underwear and jerseys that show no longer must be the same. The only rule for bottoms is no "pants on the ground" or "looking like a fool with your pants on the ground." Please note that this rule is ONLY in this region. If you play in other regions or at Nationals, you must follow those rules.
-
For teams that belong to a club, you may now borrow enough players from another club team to have seven so you don't have go without a libero or worry what will happen if the sixth players gets hurt.
-
Also for teams that belong to a club, you may now borrow two players from a lateral team in your club. For instance you have five regular team players and want to borrow two players from one or more teams in your club. If your team is A or BB, you can borrow the two players from other teams in your club who are in the same division. If you need to borrow three players to make seven, the third player would have to come from a lower division team from your club.
-
Adult teams will no longer need to register their teams with the Registrar by sending in paperwork. Team numbers will be generated by your division coordinator.
-
Until the men's program grows, we will continue to have three divisions: Gold, Silver, and Bronze.
-
The Region is looking into partnering with existing outdoor organizations in order to provide outdoor playing opportunities for the Junior Girls and Boys. We are going to need some volunteers to work on the program itself, and other volunteers to help out onsite. There is a lot to do between now and May 1. If you are interested, please contact the Commissioner, Lisa D, at commissioner@chrva.org.
-
All clubs will be heavily encouraged to use the one-day registration for tryouts.
Season 2010-2011 Reminders
-
All teams will be required to have a certified scorekeeper and are heavily encouraged to have a certified referee on their rosters in order to register as a team. The September Digs (coming out immediately following Labor Day) will include the schedule of clinics and the Fellowships, and all criteria for new Referee and Scorekeeper candidates.
-
Remember that ALL recertifying referees must take the online test and pass it EVERY year!
-
All adults who interface with Juniors, including coaches, trainers, chaperones, clinicians, referees, and tournament directors MUST pass a background check before they can work with their teams. Yes, this even applies to tournament directors because they are often checking in teams and therefore will have access to sensitive data.
If you have any feedback and/or suggestions for Digs, please drop me a note. Fall and indoor play will be here before you know it so get outside and enjoy what's left of the summer!

Commissioner's Corner
Congratulations to all of the teams that went to Nationals this year!
Throughout the season, we have a group of very dedicated individuals who work endlessly for the members in our region. The Chesapeake Region would like to extend our congratulations to the following people who have been given the USAV Robert Lindsay Meritous Award for the 2009-2010 season: Rob Bailey, Lynn Barber, Julie Briggs, and Scott Master.
The Chesapeake Region will be assisting USAV in piloting a program for parents called Promise of a Good Sport. This program will enhance the parents' experience during their child's participation in volleyball. USAV will look to us for ideas, comments, and support to prepare for a national launch of this program.
Now that we're in the outdoor season, I'd like to give our region some goals to work toward achieving. I'm looking for volunteers who have a passion for volleyball and who can further our goals. Our future goals for the next three years (not in any particular order of importance):
-
Grow the boy's game in number of members and opportunities
-
Grow the outdoor game in number of opportunities
-
Explore partnerships to enhance our region
I encourage you to email me and let me know how you can help us achieve these goals.
Thank you to all of our members who were supportive, friendly, humorous, encouraging, and kind to each other this past season. Keep up the good work!

"Leave a Ball Behind" Program a Success!
Fifty-five balls and two ball bags were collected at the CHRVA Youth Regionals in April as part of USAV's "Leave a Ball Behind" program. The program was created with the goal of collecting balls and bags that would be distributed to teams in need. CHRVA youths wrote good luck messages and then flattened the balls for easy shipping. Thanks to everyone who helped make this year's ball collection program a success!
