Southern California Joins Flying Doctors
Board Chairman Denny Freidig has a few words about the newest chapter of Los Médicos Voladores: "I trust that you're all aware by now that at the 10/1/11 quarterly meeting, LMV's Corporate Board unanimously approved the creation of a new chapter in southern California." There has been interest in growing the organization, and now is the right time to add a chapter in the south. Read More... |

Casa Hogar-Our Newest and Youngest Pueblo
Casa Hogar Canyon Buena Vista is the newest addition to our family of pueblos, adopted by Los Médicos Voladores at the October 2011 Board of Directors meeting. With that decision, LMV also adopted the cause of 50 orphans and abandoned children who live, study and play at the Safe House in the Canyon with a Beautiful View.
The area south of Ensenada Mexico is one of poverty, where even those lucky enough to live with their families face hardships. Since 1994, Casa Hogar founders Soledad and Eliseo Cota have provided a home, food, love, and education for children in need. Soledad was an orphan herself, raised at another "safe house" where she received the help and care that have made her willing to dedicate herself to children like her. In the early years Soledad housed 17 orphans in her two room house, going through discarded food at local stores to find enough for everyone to eat. Read more... |

First Impressions from New Member Bob Allen
Bob joined LMV just a few short months ago, and has been to the Oasis clinic, where he started training as an optometry assistant, and flown to Abreojos. He has also volunteered to lead the formation committee for our new Southern California Chapter. Before he retired he was Executive VP and General Manager of Gulf-California Broadcast Co., which operates 4 TV stations and 2 radio stations in the Palm Springs market. His wife, Barbara, is a retired Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. They are both pilots with instrument ratings. Bob has a commercial license and instrument rating with over 2500 hours as pilot in command. He and Barbara are looking forward to flying their J-35 Bonanza on many more trips with Flying Doctors. On a light note, Bob says, "I am part of the housekeeping staff for our two cats, who own the house. Their names are Lydia the Tattooed Kitty-Ya and Miss Kitty Russell. I used to have a Grumman Tiger and our previous cat, who lived for 18 years, was named "Tiger." Somehow "Bonanza" just didn't seem to fit a cat this time." Here is more about Bob's first days with LMV in his own words-- Read More... |

Doc-in-a-Box Rolls Out in Tortugas
And what is Doc-in-a-Box anyway? Well, basically it consists of two ADECs (which I learned in Oasis are the units that provide suction and rinse water and connect to power for high speed drills), an autoclave for steam sterilization, a Cavitron with an RDH high pressure nozzle for cleaning teeth, a sturdy compressor, and one or two dental chairs. In addition to the large pieces of equipment, the set-up includes the necessary hand instruments, along with an initial stock of consumables -all in a "box". The "box" is the secure site where our pueblo partners arrange for permanent storage, so that whenever our dentists fly in, the equipment is ready and waiting for clinic days. But aside from the components list, the real value of the Doc-in-a-Box program is what Los Médicos Voladores can now accomplish. Read More...

Holiday Greetings
In the spirit of the holidays, when we count our blessings and remember the love we share, why not send word of your work with Flying Doctors to your nearest and dearest?
To all our friends and family,
As part of our holiday letter to all of you I am sending a link to a group that means a lot to us. People ask me what we are doing with ourselves these days, and I have to tell you how much we enjoy our work with Los Médicos Voladores (LMV) also known as The Flying Doctors. You know, I decided awhile ago to spend more of my time with really great people, doing something positive in the world. LMV members donate time and resources to providing dental, vision and medical support to poor communities in California, Mexico and Latin America. There is no paid staff-- not even Board Members. Everyone shares trip costs when we fly abroad with our volunteer pilots and their planes, or we arrange for commercial flights to our destinations. We do receive delightful hospitality from the people we visit, who are grateful for the care we can give, and return such wonderful smiles and warm thanks that we always feel richer when we leave. And our trips are fun! After our work we have cookouts, music and often squeeze in a day of R & R at the ocean (many of our trips have been to Baja).
If you are interested in the things that keep us happy and busy, check out the stories and videos at flyingdocs.org and let us know what you think! We are on Facebook too, with new postings all the time, so you can keep up with the latest. Perhaps you'd like to join us! LMV needs many skills, and will train volunteers during the twice yearly clinics in Indio, California to be dental assistants in Mexico and to fit people with glasses. And by the way, we started a new program to roll out permanent sites for dental clinics in some of the villages we have been partnering with for so long. A small contribution to help us equip a dental clinic would be a nicer gift than anything else I can think of. We hope that 2012 is a healthy, happy and loving time for you all. Have a wonderful New Year and send us your news!
