Mardi Gras!
The 8th Annual Mardi Gras Dinner in Auburn was a great success! Members enjoyed a great Cajun buffet and the wonderful music of the King Cotton Dixieland Band. Thanks to everyone who came and made it such a wonderful time!
The Flying Doctors' dinner was graciously hosted by the Elks Lodge of Auburn.
If you didn't make it this year, keep an eye on our calendar. We run events year-round in every region and would love to meet you! |

Greetings!
Welcome to the inaugural eNewsletter from the Flying Doctors! We've been working hard over the past few months to update FlyingDocs.org, Facebook, YouTube, and more. We've been wanting to make communication easier and more regular for some time, and it's our hope that the monthly newsletter will be an integral part of that.
In turn, we hope that hearing stories and seeing photos of other trips and members' experiences will inspire you to share yours! We welcome anything and everything you'd like to send out to our community, be it photos, videos, stories, or news of LMV members' accomplishments!
We feel lucky to have such a vibrant community supporting us. Here's to all of you!

Director's Note
Although many of you have already met me through trips and meetings (and many more have gotten nagging emails and phone calls!), I thought I would start off our inaugural newsletter by introducing myself and explaining how I came to be a part of LMV.Last year I applied for a fellowship through my alma mater, Dartmouth College. I was looking for an organization that provided direct service that would let me practice my Spanish. Above all, I wanted to be with a group that was enthusiastic and committed to the work they did. Luckily, Marian Stahl and LMV President Tom Palmer responded to my emails with interest! I learned soon after that I had received the grant and, before I knew it, became Director at LMV. Much of my work comes in the form of projects - helping redo the website, creating an online members-only database, running a PR campaign through Facebook, and now creating the newsletter and overseeing the new Corporate Fundraising Committee. Although the Board keeps me pret-ty busy, I always welcome feedback from members and fans alike. Feel free to email me at execdir@flyingdocs.org.Thanks for making my time so far such a success! It's a pleasure to work with all of you.Regards,Rachel

Karen Brown and Denny Freidig Work Hard to Promote Education
LMV is always working to improve the health of the communities it serves, and we are committed to doing so not only through direct health care but through long-term education. Denny Freidig spoke eloquently at the January Board of Directors meeting about the importance of education and the steps we can take to improve the services we offer. Karen Brown also works hard to promote new education programs out of
South Bay. Currently, we have some educational videos (check them out on YouTube!) and would love to see more. Pamphlets, videos, training programs - if you have an idea, let us know! Make sure to also check out Denny's work on Adopt-A-Pueblo online.

Berkeley Students Look to Give Back at LMV
On February 11th, Executive Director Rachel Bernhard spoke at UC Berkeley to a group of roughly 30 students interested in public health and health care issues. Despite little free time and inflexible budgets, many students said they were interested in volunteering for LMV in a myriad of capacities. Some were interested in translating, others in designing education programs, and still others in getting hands-on medical experience in another country. In fact, several of them became fans of the LMV Facebook page within hours of the presentation! Check out the page and say hi to Wenting, Ann, Jasmine, and others.

January Board Meeting Rushed By Weather
The Board of Directors met January 9th in Columbia, CA. The meeting included a presentation by Executive Director Rachel Bernhard on strategic planning and a wonderful trip summary by Chief Trip Coordinator and Gold Country President Judi Foy. This year, LMV sent out 25 regular trip groups and 5 support flights, and served over 6400 patients. Much discussion centered around making sure to visit every village at least twice a year if possible. The remaining agenda items, unfortunately, had to be delayed until the April meeting. The April meeting is scheduled for April 10th at the Napa Airport.
