Student Planners: A Great Theory That Often Fails in Practice

It's no secret that planners are essential for students to develop time-management skills; however, schools often place the tool in students' hands and assume that they know how to use it effectively.  Additionally, administrators expect teachers or parents to "check planners", but do they really know what that means?

A common excuse students give is that they do not need to use a planner because they can remember what they need to do.

Greetings!

It is hard to believe that the summer is gone and the 2012-2013 school year is actually in full swing!   But, I am ready to "Bring It On!" Aside from being a  popular movie, "Bring It On" seems to be IDALA's mantra at the moment. BRING IT ON!

In May, we had another fantastic study group meeting that examined the current research surrounding twice-exceptional students. Sarae Shenkin, our treasurer, presented two articles, "How Can Such a Smart Kid Not Get It?" and an article

from Education Weekly, "Research Sheds Light on 'Twice Exceptional Students."  Both articles provided great content that fed a very lively discussion. Our next study group will be held in Thousand Oaks on Saturday November 3rd, 2012. The  January study group will be held in West L.A.

Throughout the summer, our BIG project was our new website, same URL: www.dyslexiala.org. We want to say a huge thank you to Jason Mills of Mills Creative, Inc. for his time, creativity, dedication, and commitment to this project. The new site is very user friendly and provides some great resources to the community. Additionally, the new site has a variety of wonderful video content that really captures the

dyslexia experience. Please join the over 1,000 visitors and check out everything that our site has to offer (events, photos, a blog, information on the Experience Dyslexia® simulation, and National's Twitter feed). The other fabulous new

addition to our community outreach is our Facebook page.  Come "Like" us...because we certainly "Like" you!

In August, we held our Board Member Retreat. Our fabulous and dedicated team of board members strategized about fundraising, advertising, upcoming trainings, and how we can better support YOU! As a result, we came

up with many of our upcoming programs and events that we hope may interest you.

With the start of a new school year, we had the exciting opportunity to run our Experience Dyslexia Simulation® for 80 teachers, aides, administrators, and therapists at Summit View School in Culver City.  It was a fabulous morning and we were thrilled to help kick-off the new school year!

Bring It On, October!  It is Dyslexia Awareness Month. Throughout the month, we will be holding fundraising events in various locations around Los Angeles to help get raise awareness about Dyslexia!

Article: Dyslexia May Be Caused By Signal Processing Problem in Brain
From: Health Day News

The learning disability dyslexia is caused by a problem with signal processing involving speech recognition in the brain, according to a new study.

Although they do not lack intelligence, people with dyslexia have trouble reading, understanding and explaining individual words or entire texts. Researchers in Germany found this is because a part of their brain's thalamus -- called the "medial geniculate body" -- does not process speech sounds correctly.

"This malfunction at a low level of language processing could percolate through the entire system. This explains why the symptoms of dyslexia are so varied," Begona Diaz, from the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, said in an institute news release.

The researchers conducted two experiments. First, participants were asked to perform speech-comprehension tasks. Using magnetic resonance tomography, the researchers found abnormal brain responses during tasks that required the recognition of speech sounds.

Article:  Educators Using New Tools To Overcome Challenges of Dyslexia
From: The Brownsville Herald

The letters change places or appear jumbled. Several words run together and look like one compound word. Sometimes the words may appear to float up to the next line.

These are just a few of the many symptoms of dyslexia, which covers a broad range of learning disabilities, experts say.

At one time, the condition was misunderstood and those who were misdiagnosed were often considered lazy. But the study of dyslexia has changed greatly since it was an emerging field in the 1970s.

Experts now recognize dyslexia as a neurological processing disorder in which the brain sees something but interprets it differently than other people. Educators today are using new tools and methods and new technology to diagnose dyslexia and overcome the challenges associated with it.
