Several Projects
June 2011

Dear Friends
For those of you in the Lakes Region, I will be at Castle in the Clouds with a NH Furniture Masters event August 14, and I'll have with me a chair from the dining set "Flower's Plus" which those who have been following this newsletter have seen in progress. It is also in the last NHFMA catalogue, and in the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NVRvcRIuvw&feature=player_embedded which is worth the watch if you haven't seen it.
Also, watch for the opening reception of the Furniture Masters show at Canterbury Shaker Village, August 6, and I will be doing a carving demonstration that day as well. I'll be working on one of the     panels shown below, for the League of NH Craftsmen.
You can see the full schedule on my website using the link at the end of the newsletter.

I have been multi tasking lately, with several projects going at once - a lamp and two public art projects, So here is a sampling.

orNHology 2

This lamp is a commission for Ric Miller of Eliot Maine. It is the second lamp showing birds native to New Hampshire. This one has a great blue heron, a pilieated woodpecker and a kingfisher. You can see the cardboard templates in the background. The lamp has three parts that come together in the center, with the lamp pipe running up a channel in the middle. I use a Leviton dimmer fixture, which is very nice. Ric will be getting a Peter Bloch lampshade to go with it. He has kindly allowed me to show this lamp at the League of NH Craftsmen's fair at Sunapee, Living with Craft show the week of August 7 to 14.
Black Bear Pair 4

Have you seen any of the animal benches I have made? So far there have been hippos, whales, and others but the most popular is the Black Bears. I get to make another for the gallery at the new League of NH Craftsmen headquarters, and it will also be shown at Sunapee. This how it all starts - a stack of rough cut out parts. Much of the construction is stack lamination, and I need the parts to be truly flat, but wood seems to move and twist soon after it is milled. To minimize this I partly mill it, let is sit for a while, and finish the milling just before doing the laminating. You can see an example of how this will be when it's done on my website. To see Black Bear Pair finished scroll through the gallery. To see the how this stack becomes a bench go to http://www.cooperwoodsculptor.com/howItsMade.html

Hands at Work

This exciting project is for the new League Headquarters as wall. It is a series of panels which will go on a metal structure over the reception desk. The metal is by David Little, and it will also have lighting by Peter Bloch. Steve Hayden and Seth Kiedaisch are collaborating on the desk below. This photo shows a stack of panels ready to carve. Often I transfer drawings using carbon paper, but this time it seemed easier to just glue them on, and carve away the paper along with the wood.

Three Carved panels.

Here is a photo of three panels which I have carve so far. These show turning a glass bowl, polishing a piece of jewelry, and setting up a loom. Seven to go.

The install should e complete by late August. Be sure to visit the League HQ to see them all.
