Education Center Happenings
Our winter term has come to a close, and we have had a great couple of months.  Recently, the students completed a Food Around the World unit in the classroom. They learned about food from China, Latin America, and the Middle East. Along with Middle Eastern food, the students discussed the Arab Spring and the conflict happening in the area. Students have also enjoyed the Sustainable Agriculture unit, where they helped set up a green house and worked outside composting materials, mulching, and building trails.

In Math, students have been focusing on variable equations. One particularly popular activity is an engineering game called Cargo Bridge. In Language Arts, students have learned about mythology.

The students have gone on many field trips this year. Recently, they went to Mt. Pisgah and Skinners Butte, where they observed an eagle's nest. The snow in late March made outdoor field trips a little more difficult, but students still enjoyed a trip to the Eugene Public Library. Students also really enjoyed a trip to a local coffee shop, The Strand, where they played chess, checkers and read quietly. Lastly, the students and faculty enjoyed a drive around Eugene, where they looked at community gardens to see where some of our local food is grown.

MLK IN THE NEWS

Alex Platt, a University of Oregon Student,  who works with the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program in the State Of Oregon Penitentiary came by to visit our program!  After his visit, Alex wrote a lovely article describing his experience at our Education Center.  Please take a moment to read what he said!  Thanks, Alex, for your continued support and involvement in our program!

 Asian Pacific Family Club Donation

Asian Pacific Family Club located within the Oregon State Penitentiary

MLK was recently awarded a donation by the APFC of OSP.  The APFC holds annual fundraisers to make donations in the community that are consistent with one of the goals of the club  - to steer youth in a better direction for a successful future.  Alex Plattner, a volunteer with Youth Services and OSP family clubs made the connection and invited Matthew Sterner, MLK Program Supervisor,  to address all the family clubs at OSP at the awards ceremony in December 2012. The donated funds will be used as scholarship money for our students.

"The immediate goal of the Asian Pacific Family Club's projects with at-risk youth is to help provide education programs that offer a safe avenue to a successful adult life. The ultimate goal is to keep youth from becoming felons--to keep youth out of our prisons. We donated to MLK because it offers youth comprehensive services. MLK checks up with youth and provides continuous support, and anything less than that would be inadequate in the face of the challenges faced by the youth that MLK assists. I am happy to have donated to MLK. We would give  every penny to that program."

- Kosal So, President, Asian Pacific Family Club, Oregon State Penitentiary

Culinary Arts Program

Not only have our Culinary Arts student's been busy with
multiple caterings, but they also worked at this year's Chef's Night Out, a benefit for Food for Lane County.  The student's prepped for three days to serve 1,000 portions of a Vietnamese sandwich called a Banh Mi and Tiger Tears Salad.  Rose Reyes and Kyle deBarros were the two youth chosen to work at the event!  While Rose and Kyle helped to prepare the menu options by making their own bread and mixing everything together from scratch, they also learned how to explain what was in each dish to all of  the attendees.  Kyle and Rose served out over 700 portions of each dish in a period of three short hours. We were all very impressed with Rose and Kyle's professionalism and communication!

Horticulture Program

The Horticulture Crew has been very busy working with  City Of Eugene  on different trail projects  and working hard atop Skinners Butte.  Crews have also kept busy working on the campground and facilities maintenance of the Middle Fork Ranger District. Some of our older paid youth have been trained to use a walk behind skid steer loader and power wheel barrows, in completion of some of these labor intensive projects.

We are also in full spring garden operations! The greenhouse is loaded with salad greens, the garden beds are tilled, fertilized, and a plan is hatching for how to manage the one acre vegetable garden this Summer and Fall. Please contact Matthew Sterner, if you are interested in volunteering time and energy in our beautiful garden; 541-682-4775.
