Education Center Happenings

We have had a great quarter with a lot of exciting events!  We have continued to go on weekly field trips, have welcomed many guests, begun a new interdisciplinary approach to our curriculum!   Along with all of these changes, we have continued to have a lot of fun.  Check out what's new...

Recently we worked on  Zines, in our Oregon Beat class. Most of our students have never worked on their own mini-publication, it was great to see them explore some unfamiliar academic territory.

We have continued to work on integrating our vocational experiences with academic instructions. One way we have begun this process is through our Re-thinking Food curriculum, where students team up with the culinary arts program and begin making new connections with the food we eat, were we get it, how it is prepared, and the presentation of the food.

Students and staff cooked a native

Liberian Sweet Potato Pone.

Additionally we have students learning about Sustainable Agriculture.  In our classroom connection to the horticulture program, students will take an in depth study of seeds, plants, agriculture, corporate versus local agriculture and native landscape issues.

MLK Catering has been very busy! Our culinary students have completed many events events for groups ranging from a few guests up to 80 guests. Some of our noteworthy recent events include:

Horticulture Program

Crews have been transforming the Skinner Butte  trail system with rock and post retaining walls and 4 inches of compacted gravel. Crews have also been restoring an Oak savanna habitat on the butte, removing fast growing firs and a verity of exotic invasive plants.

Crews have been also been busy  bucking and brushing the Fall Creek National Scenic Trail.  The Fall Creek trail is near Lowell and boasts the closest Old Growth forests near Eugene.  Come for a visit!

Snow Shoe Trip!

The students and staff had a great time on our snow shoe trip!

A big thank you to the the City of Eugene's River House for their help to make this trip a success!

O Heroes and MLK!

"...thanks for inviting me to this. I've never even seen a whole basketball game or been anywhere like this. I needed this...something good and fun..things have been so hard...thank you so much!" -15 year old student

The MLK Education Center is embarking on a partnership with O HeroesThe O Heroes organization is a University of Oregon Student-Athlete group with the goal of creating a collective organization that can positively impact Oregon, most specifically the Eugene/ Springfield community.  Because for many of our students the University of Oregon's Student Athletes are viewed as role models in the community, we were fortunate to have some of the student-athletes visit our program!   O Heroes generously hosted our youth at the recent Oregon-Washington men's basketball game and the women's Civil War game.
