Education Center Happenings

Students have been working on many fun lessons and recently finished up an enthralling unit on hip hop poetry! Students have been comparing classic poetry with different hip hop styles, as well as working on alliteration, illusion, and creating their own pieces! Students also completed working on five paragraph editorials about various topics of their choice. This lesson is generally a huge hit in the classroom(s), and proves to be one of the favorite topics taught!

Pumpkin Pie
Pie Cook Off

In math class, the students are working on fractions, integers, percentages, and measurements.  Through these measurements, we see how math can overlap into Culinary Arts work. As a part of this culinary measurement unit, students participated in a pie cook off where they made various types of pie from complete scratch.  Many of the ingredients in these pies were from the Horticulture Harvest Sale, which took place in early October.

Footbag

In P.E., students are currently playing lawn games such as Bocce Ball and Footbag (freestyle and technique). We have also taken the students on trail runs, back packing adventures, and hiking.

Last but not least, Oregon Beat has accomplished a lot this term. The students in this program have learned about Oregon's geography, literature, harvest, and music. Student's read Stephen King's The Body, which was the inspiration for the 1980's movie Stand By Me and also visited Brownsville, Oregon where the movie was shot.

Florence, Oregon

To finish up this quarter, the students have taken many field trips including, Florence and HJ Andrews Experimental Forest!

Cain Barnett

Cain can be considered "a senior" in the Culinary Arts Program because of his consistent attendance for an extended period of time.  Cain brings a smile and a great attitude on a daily basis.  A strong young leader, the Culinary Arts Program depends on Cain to show new youth the ropes.  Cain is an ardent learner and is always helpful.  We are amazed at the positive growth he has made during his time in our program.
MLK is proud to nominate Cain for Culinary Arts Worker of the Month.

October's Horticulture
Worker of the Month

 Jacob Smith
Horticulture Worker of the Month is Jacob Smith!  Jake is a great example of MLK Ed Center expectations:  he stays safe by carefully listening to directions the first time they are given and then follows them with great discretion.  He is respectful to staff by using good eye contact, maintaining a polite and friendly attitude with everyone he works with.  Jake also shows responsibility by being punctual to work and is always ready for Safety Circles before each shift begins.  Jake consistently fulfills all duties as required for hired youths and produces a steadily high quality of work.
Congratulations, Jake!

Horticulture Program

"The crews have been great this summer. Like always, hats off to James and Alan. They are always on top of things and take extra initiative to make sure all the youth are working to full potential and that work objectives are being met. Thanks for the work!"

The Horticulture Crew has been working hard for the last three months on a variety of jobs. One of the many projects our team has been working on is improving the mountain bike trails for the US Forest Service. This labor intensive work involves widening, leveling, and sloping trails in preparation for riders in the spring.

The City Crew has been hard at work on the Ridgeline Trail System. They have leveled the trails, added water features, and put down gravel. All of the work the Horticulture Crew has done over these last three months is impressive and an excellent contribution to the community.

On the farm, the students have been harvesting the seasonal crops including PUMPKINS and prepping the garden for spring planting. Students have removed old plants, laid down mulch,  and finished up with a thorough cleaning of the greenhouse.

"On behalf of our school, I would like to thank your organization so very much for the generous donation of pumpkins. Some teachers chose some to use some in their classes to do science experiments (weight predictions, how many seeds, etc.). Other pumpkins will go home with students from families who cannot afford to buy a pumpkin this time of year." -Lauri Rockwood

Technology Program

Our Technology Program just started up, and the students are having a blast! The first project our Technology students have been tackling this year is Podcasting! Students have been creating their own podcasts and have also enjoyed editing these podcasts with garage band. A favorite activity of the editing process has been creating various beats with the GarageBand program. Stay tuned for future updates about our Technology Program.

Culinary Arts Program

The Culinary team is looking forward to our 6th Annual Holiday Meal on December 8th. For the previous five years the Culinary Arts team has invited the community to celebrate the holiday season over a free meal prepared by the students and enjoy raffle prizes donated by local businesses and organizations!
