What's new at the MLK Ed. Center?

The MLK Education Center has been staying busy indoors and outdoors, during this rainy time of the year. Inside the Education Center we have had people from the community and partnering organization bring opportunities into the classroom. Two representatives from the Job Corps presented to students about their programming...this got the wheels turning for students such as Lukoda Brooks about what a future with their program could look like for him.

Students and staff had the opportunity to tune their ears to the talent of the Oregon Mozart Players Quartet. Students were educated on classical compositions from a variety of musical eras.  The musician gave some history about popular composers, as well as their own experience in developing talent and love for classical music. One student, Samantha Flowers, was able to experience firsthand what it felt like to play the violin.

Back in February the whole school bundled up and ventured out on a snowshoeing adventure. Hiking side by side with the experts from the City of Eugene Riverhouse Outdoor Program the youth trekked into the woods, at the Gold Lake Sno-Park and shelter. After making their own trail through snow up to their waists, they spent the afternoon digging snow forts and throwing snowballs.

We will be looking forward to some sunshine, as we enter into the final quarter of the school year. Teacher and employment specialists have been guiding youth to complete resumes, applications and scholarships in preparation for their future. The next few months will be filled with fun and excitement for everyone.

Technology

The Technology Program students have creatively been working on a variety of projects over the last several weeks.  Using stop-motion animation and the latest in film editing software, students have generated claymation characters and have developed voice over audio. We have recently traveled to the Eugene Library for research purposes and found a rich supply of relevant materials.   Students will continue to learn skills in preproduction, filming, editing, and audio.

Student of the Month: Chelsea Jackson

Chelsea Jackson

Congratulations to Chelsea Jackson for being awarded the MLK Ed Center student of the month! Chelsea recently completed her GED testing and scored a perfect score 800 on her reading test.  Chelsea's teachers describe her as highly motivated.  She clearly establishes and then tackles her goals.  Positive attitude and incredible level of focus add to Chelsea's strengths.  On top of her academic success, Chelsea has a great sense of humor and a witty personality.

Culinary Arts: Chef's Night Out

The Culinary Arts team has been very very busy this quarter!  One of the most exciting events we were a part of was Chefs Night Out, on April 5th.  Our team prepared extensively for this culinary exhibition, where local chefs from restaurants and catering companies gather and present their culinary expertise.

Our team presented three major items:

Miniature Quail Eggs; on a shredded phyllo dough nest, and topped with a red bell pepper aioli!

Miniature Fish Tacos; made with smoked ling cod, lime cream sauce, and topped with cabbage!

Roast Beef Sliders; made with smoked sirloin, with a horseradish cream, and caramelized onions!

Jennifer Harless, Aimee Barerra, and Brianna Deisler-Hicks worked at this yearly event, where they enhanced their customer service skills, prepared food on site, and worked as a team under serious pressure! The Culinary Arts team received a lot of exposure for our wonderful programs...many people were impressed by our presentation and our professional manner!!

A:  Palo Alto, California
Q:  If you could have lunch with any person living or dead who would that person be and why?
A: Booker T. Washington!! Q: Who was a great influence or mentor to your while you were growing up?

Q:  Why did you enter this field of work?
A:  When I am with kids, it's like watching little pieces of my heart walking around.  I am meant to do this work.
Q:  What is your favorite part about working with MLK?
A:  Being given the opportunity to hear the kid's stories.
Q:  What is something about you nobody would know?
A:  When I was a little, I had pet banana slugs who lived outside...they were all named Carrie, and I would take them on trips in my wagon every day after school.
Horticulture Program: Turnpikes and Trails

City crew has been working almost exclusively on the Ridgeline Trail System, in Eugene. From the Fox Hollow Trailhead to Mt. Baldy, crews have worked hard to gravel the trail, build turnpikes (raised trail bed), water features and place culverts. Most recently, crews have worked on repairing trail at the Blanton Road Trailhead area. City crew also finds time to remove plenty of exotic invasive such as Scotts Broom and English Hawthorn. Youth have received high praise from the public and from the City of Eugene! Take a hike and check out the quality work produced by the youth!

For the BLM the crew has been hard at work building new trail on the Shotgun OHV (off highway vehicle) trail system. This is very labor intensive work that includes: Bucking and removal of downed trees and limbs, brush cutting of all shrubs and small trees, removal (by digging out and cutting roots) of all stumps, cutting (flattening trail with hand tools), building water features, turnpikes, retaining walls and finally graveling the entire trail. Many miles of new quad and motorcycle trails have been finish to the delight of the public and our friends at the BLM.
