Vintage Lamy

catherine powell's lamysCogniscenti of the Lamy brand will recognise this as a set of original Safari's,  dating back to its launch in 1980. It came in a box made to mimic an animal crate, as used by animal hunters in Africa, and was available in either Savannah Green, which this is, or terracotta.

Customer Catherine Powell owns all three, and all are in fine working order - specially since the fountain pen enjoyed 15 minutes pampering in our ultrasonic bath, after which it was good as new.

It's a great looking set of pens and, and of real interest of fans of this pen which has still, in my view, to be bettered.  Anybody got an example of the terracotta?

.

We were asked to get one of these in for a customer to have a look at.  Needless to say, it left with him - Black Whirl is one of Conway Stewart's most attractive resins.  It really is rather special, so we have another one on the way.

Conway Stewart Coronet Black Whirl

It is part of a small limited edition of only 50 numbered fountain pens based on the popular Coronet model. Each pen will be crafted out of our hand-made dynamic Black Whirl resin material in their Devon factory.

Conway Stewart say:- The Coronet Black Whirl Limited Edition is the perfect choice for lovers of our signature whirl materials. Both bold and adventurous, this finish is a hit for those who demand the cutting edge of design. Shimmering shades of pearlescent deep red are blended together to form the backdrop to swirling lines of rich black. The effect is stunning and outspoken. The Black Whirl is both bold and adventurous taking this whirl design to new heights. Due to the individual nature of this material, no two Black Whirl Coronet pens will look exactly alike.

The special packaging for the Conway Stewart Coronet series has been designed to house your fountain pen and to serve as a showcase pen stand for the writing desk. The display box is crafted of luxurious full grain leather in a rich black colour. Not only is this an elegant and stylish presentation to house and protect your gift, the top of the lid can be reversed to make an executive desk stand for display.

Available to order now until April 02, 2011 - orders will be fulfilled on a first come first served basis. No orders will be accepted after this date. This colour will not be repeated on this model thereafter and will not be available as a bespoke pen.

This pen is available on order to our customers at the special price of £255.  Please contact us to order or visit the website by clicking HERE

Fantasy Pens

Tickets for the Olympics went on sale this morning, reminding me that one of my favourite and most ideosyncratic pens was designed to commemorate the Tokyo Olympics in 1964.
Now we all know
Namiki Maki-e Pen
Namiki Maki-e
Pilot Pens as the spiritual home of the cheap (but effective) green retractible.
The company was founded by Ryosuke Namiki, and from the earliest days the company has been making fountain pens of the highest quality under the Namiki name, many finished with exquisite Maki-e lacquerwork, a technique first developed in  8th Century Japan.
Anyway, in 1964 they decided to do something modern, innovative and surprising to welcome the Olympics to Japan, and came up with the Namiki Vanishing Point, as far as I know the firstever  press button retractable fountain pen.  And it really is a cracker!  It does everything that a fountain pen should do, but doesn't have a cap.  Press the button and the nib slides back into the body of the pen, and a neat little flap covers it.
Namiki Decimo Retractable Fountain Pen
Vanishing Point
The nib is a little gem.  It is small, compared to most european nibs, and made of gold.  Available as fine, medium or broad,  in common with most Japanese pens these tend to be on the fine side.  And they are rather less expensive than the Maki-e pens, which start at over £1,000 and, to be honest, don't really seem to stop.  So have a look at a potentially purchasable bit of Japanese technology and craft on our website by clicking HERE.

That's all, Folks!

Lots of promises still to fulfill in respect of journals and paper, but by the end of this month we should be nearly there.  And look out for announcements about some changes in the layout of the shop in early April!

Until next time, Best Wishes

John
