Helping You Connect With The Animals You Love!
December 2009
 Lydia

Happy holidays! It's the season to bundle up, cuddle with animal friends, and slow down to appreciate life. As the year wraps up, be sure to take time to celebrate accomplishments, learn from challenges, and set your dreams for the coming year. Life is full of opportunities...believe it!

One of my favorite accomplishments this year is launching my public presentation "Let's Talk Animals". I offered this talk in June and September in Colorado. Many people returned to hear it a second time and I was honored!

Several animals guided me to create this presentation. Messages of courage, hope, and success were shared through true stories of animals. This talk is perfect timing as we continue on the road of recovery with our economy and it's many impacts upon our lives.

I will offer the presentation again in 2010 in Colorado and Oregon. It can also be a great fundraiser so If you know a group that would like to sponsor the talk, let me know!

Note: New dates for 2010 will be announced in January. I, too, need this quiet time of year and will be preparing my 2010 schedule soon. So no worries...I'll let you know when dates are set. And, thank you for your continued interest in my classes and events.

A Man And His Canine Teachers Write A Book For The World!

Doug Koktavy
Doug Koktavy and I met by telephone in February 2005. He called in for his first consultation and said..."I have no idea why I'm doing this, or if I even believe in it, but my vet suggested I give it a try. My dog, Beezer, has been diagnosed terminally ill with kidney disease and I'll do anything for my dog."

What unfolded during that talk was a beautiful experience with a man who loved his dog more than himself...and a dog that was taking care of his human companion to ease the blow of his impending death. Beezer not only explained how he was doing but also began to plot out the details of his final journey to come.

As is the case with consultations, I received wisdom for the person from the animal. Beezer told me to tell Doug he would be writing a book about his dying experience. Doug was more than shocked as he replied "I'm a friggin lawyer, I don't write books"!

Doug called me back again and again. We enjoyed many talks with Beezer, and then his brother, Boomer, who became ill with bone cancer. The journey may sound sad, but what unfolded is an amazing story of a changed man through the help of his canine brothers.

Doug indeed did write Beezer and Boomer's book and it's out just in time for holiday gift shopping for the animal lovers in your life. This wonderful book is a heartfelt story of courage, honesty, humor and amazement that all will love.

Winter and Holiday Safety

Lydia, the beautiful girl dog loved by my assistant Amy, sits in the snow and ponders life. Or perhaps she's doing what animals do best...being in the moment!

Remember as everyone enjoys the cold weather and the holiday festivities, we must be on high alert to keep our animals safe. For many years I've helped people and their pets on the other side of accidents and trauma. So I'd like to share my top 10 list of things to remember to enjoy the season with a happy, healthy and whole experience:

1.  Just because it is cold and not much thirst occurs does not mean animals should drink less. Be sure to have your friends drink fresh, purified water every day.

2.  Many dogs and horses will act just fine out in the cold and not notice the effects of the freezing temperatures. Be sure to be the judge for them and bring them inside when it is below freezing.

3.  Anti-Freeze is a well known deadly poison for any animal. It smells sweet and they like the taste. Be sure to keep all animals away from any possible spillage.

4.  When outside weather interferes with normal exercise routines, boredom can kick in. Excess energy, anxiety, overeating, and destructive behaviors can occur. Be sure to create fun activities indoors and make outside exercise happen whenever possible even if it is brief. A stimulated mind helps increase calmness.

5.  Streets and sidewalks are treated with salts, sands, and chemicals. Be sure to rinse and wipe off paws after walks and outside adventures.

6.  Holiday sweet treats are sometimes unattended when company and busy household activities are occurring. Keep all chocolates and other sweets in cabinets. Even the best behaved dogs have ended up in dangerous trouble.

7.  Too much meat is not a good thing. If you usually give your animals meat in their daily diet, be sure to not overdo it when cooking large feasts. Trim away fat and only give normal daily amount. If you have plenty, freeze it and share some later. Everything in moderation - and keep all meat scraps out of kitchen garbage.

8.  Tinsel and ribbons on trees and packages can be deadly. Do not leave any around the house. Cats have rough tongues that grab and pull items down their throats. So even if it looks like they are just playing and you don't think they will eat it, they still can end up choking or getting it lodged internally.

9.  If you let your cats outside, be sure to expect them to return indoors before it is dark. Yes, I know, they won't appreciate it because the days are short and that's just too darn controlling for their liking. But remember...wildlife is extra hungry in the winter and many critters will come hunting right into your back yard.

10.  Share joy with your loved ones. Holidays can be stressful for people and that will result in the animals feeling your stress. This can lead to their own stress and resulting worry. So take a break from the to-do list every so often and play, laugh, and love.
Holiday Gift Discounts are offered to established clients for family and friends that are new clients. If you purchase a half hour consult, it will be $55 rather than the new client rate of $70. And, if you choose to purchase an hour, it is $80 rather than $95. Just call the office and let us know who you are gifting and how you wish to make payment. Then present the gift however you wish and tell the recipient to call us directly to schedule. Discounts will be available until February 15, 2010 - so tell them to call soon to get scheduled.

Best wishes to you and all of the wonderful animals that bless you with their love. Have a fun holiday season and may the New Year bring you much happiness, progress and joy!
