Building the DUNHAM Legacy
Dunham EquiptoWelcome to the first of many Dunham Fund newsletters.  Building a legacy was the wish of John C. Dunham, an entrepreneur and visionary, who established a private foundation in 1996, "dedicated through wise gifting to making the world a more comfortable, safer place to live and prosper." A history of Mr. Dunham is synonymous with the history of Equipto, the Aurora company founded by Mr. Dunham's father in 1907 and where John served as president and chairman of the board until 1994. During his lifetime, Mr. Dunham was a strong supporter of several Aurora-area educational institutions, where he inspired students to achieve excellence in scholarship, character development, work ethic and commitment to community service.   Since John's death in 2006, the Dunham Fund Board of Advisors continues to fulfill his philanthropic wishes through grants and scholarships in the Aurora, Illinois area.  Learn more about John Dunham and his legacy.

DUNHAM Nursing Scholars
Dunham Scholars Nurse
In September 2009, the Dunham Fund announced the award of a two-year, $750,000 grant to advance nursing in the Aurora area.  The grant created a Dunham Nursing Scholarship program to build a high-performing, diverse workforce of nurses within the Dunham Fund's service area.

Beginning in January 2010 and throughout 2011, the program will fund 121 scholarships for nursing students at the undergraduate, graduate and post graduate levels attending Waubonsee Community College and Aurora University.  The scholarship program will be implemented and monitored by a steering committee with representatives from Alden of Waterford, Aurora University, Dreyer Medical Clinic, Kane County Health Department, Rush-Copley Medical Center, Rush-Copley Foundation, Provena Mercy Medical Center, Visiting Nurse Association of Fox Valley and Waubonsee Community College.  Learn more about the Nursing Scholars on the Dunham Fund website.

Measuring Impact
DUNHAM Early College Academy
Since the awarding of the Dunham Fund grant in 2008, staff members of Waubonsee Community College have collaborated with East and West Aurora High Schools to create the Dunham Early College Academy (DECA).  Housed at WCC's Aurora Campus, the Academy offers a rigorous dual-credit and college readiness program for high school students representing under-served populations. The program's impact on its students has been measured since DECA's inception.  Outcome highlights include:
  • Successful completion of the full program of 24 semester hours of college credit by 28 our of the 50 students in the first cohort.
  • All 28 of these students are planning on attending a post-secondary institution.
  • Of the second cohort, 31 of the 46 students completed the full 12 hours of college credit for the first half of the 2008-2009 academic year.
  • Outstanding grades by DECA students were earned, with a higher percentage of satisfactory grades as compared to the overall WCC student population.
Visit the Dunham Fund website to see more evidence of the overall impact of DECA in Waubonsee's "End of Year Report 2008-2009 Executive Summary".

DUNHAM SCHOLARSHIPS
through Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley

Seniors must reside and graduate from a high school in the Dunham Fund service area to be eligible for one of six $30,000, four year Dunham college scholarships to be awarded for the Fall 2010 academic year.  The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley Scholarship Committee will evaluate the scholarship applicants and award two Dunham Scholarships based on excellence in academic performance; two based on great financial need; and two based on the students' ability to overcome personal obstacles to achieve their educational goals.  A Community Foundation online scholarship application for the Fall 2010 academic year is available for the first time on CCFRV's website. This year, the Dunham Fund made a proactive grant to the Community Foundation to initiate one online application process for all of the foundation's college scholarships, including the Dunham Scholarships.

Ryan J. Maley CFFRV Logo Black
Ryan J. Maley is the chairperson of the Dunham Fund Board of Advisors.  He is also the Vice President of Operations for Software Technologies Group, an engineering services company providing product development services in a variety of new technology fields.  Previously, he worked for Equipto Electronics Corporation, a company co-founded by John Dunham.  Ryan holds  BS degrees in business and psychology.  He is a second generation Mexican American and resides in Aurora Illinois with his wife Ursula, who works for a nonprofit agency.  They have three college-age children.

Ryan expresses his commitment to the Dunham Fund as,
"At the Dunham Fund, our mission is to honor the legacy of our founder, John C. Dunham.  We do this not only by supporting John's direct interest in education and his commitment to the Aurora-area community, but also by following the principles that John developed during his many successful years in business.
At the Fund, we operate using a venture capital model of philanthropy.  Our goal is to encourage the start of innovative and collaborative programs in order to demonstrate sustainable, high-impact change in the community.  As one of the largest foundations in the area, we seek not only to lead through our giving, but by fostering an environment of excellence by encouraging best practices, innovative thinking and maximizing the value of grants.
Of course, as grant makers, we rely on the other organizations for actual implementation of programs that create positive change.  We are fortunate to operate in a community with many capable and effective agencies that have demonstrated the value of our approach such as the Dunham Early College Academy at Waubonsee Community College and the Dunham Student Assistance Center at Breaking Free.
As the Dunham Fund continues to gain experience and wisdom in grant making, we hope to support even more innovative, collaborative and effective programs for the betterment of our community."
