Cookie Dough Sale "Supporting Your School Has Never Tasted Better!" The Otis Spunkmeyer cookie dough fundraiser to benefit Cedar Hill School kicks off in this month. Please be sure you received a brochure in your child's folder. All tubs are $15. Note that all items in this sale are made on equipment that also processes nuts. All varieties are packaged in frozen, pre-portioned nuggets in a 2.7-pound tub. Nuggets can be cut in half to make a great snack-sized cookie. Since the dough is pre-portioned, you can bake just a few or a big batch of cookies, brownies or pretzels. Dough keeps for 6 months in the freezer. There will be great incentive prizes for selling the cookie dough! Any questions or concerns please feel free to contact parents Amy Murphy at amyemurph@yahoo.com or Jennifer Sheehan at jennsheehan@cox.net |

Dear Families, The month of October began with the "Breaking of Boards" our first Feinstein Good Deeds Assembly. Instructors from the Mastery Martial Arts had a captive audience of students and staff members as they demonstrated their unique talents. Families could purchase boards to decorate. Students and instructors from Mastery Martial Arts will break the boards at Flames of Hope: A Celebration of Life at WaterFire on October 8th. This special fundraiser is for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Foundation which provides support to people in Rhode Island. NECAP (New England Common Assessment Program) is underway. The students in grades 3 - 6 have just completed the Reading component and will be taking the Mathematics during the week of October 11th. Our fifth grade students will also be taking the Writing section on October 19th & 20th. The students are working extremely hard and I am proud of their efforts. The Science NECAP scores for last year fourth grade students were sent home on Friday October 7, 2011. We have many changes this year in our curriculums. This is in response to the adoption of the Common Core State Standards. With the new standards, we have a new Reading Series - Journeys. In the area of Mathematics, a new Scope & Sequence has been developed that all the Warwick Schools are following. Both subjects are aligned with the new standards. Lastly, the teachers and I are also involved in the full implementation of a new evaluation system. Lifetouch pictures will be October 11, 2011. Students will be called to the old library by classroom. Please have your child bring in his/her envelope on the day of pictures. All students will have their picture taken. We will schedule a re-take if any student is absent on that day. Mr. Peltier Principal |

Hi Parents,
Fall fun at a farm, the Book Fair, unveiling a new school website and a Halloween party are among the activities that are taking place around Cedar Hill School in October. With our kids now settled into their routines in the classrooms, your PTO is moving forward on a number of activities and events.
Let's start with the website. The Cedar Hill School PTO website has been designed by two talented parents (thank you Angela Giusti and Kristie Stark!). It will be a valuable informational resource for parents and a great way to stay connected with what's happening in and around the school. Everything from classroom supply lists, school forms, and PTO meeting dates to a monthly calendar and artwork and projects from our students will be available on the site. Angela and Kristie will walk us through the website during Wednesday's (Oct. 12th) PTO meeting at 7 p.m in the Library.
Also, at our PTO meeting this month, we will discuss next steps of the Cedar Hill Needs Assessment. The Needs Assessment Committee met in September to discuss our three priority needs, Technology, Facility Space and Safety/Parking Lot.
The PTO is also sponsoring three events in October for families. First mark your calendar for the Book Fair that takes place in the old library on October 19-20. Next, October 28th is our Annual Halloween Party! Second, the Autumn Festival is scheduled for Friday, October 21 at Warwick's Morris Farm. With hayrides, corn mazes and games, this is an event designed for the whole family.
Thank you to all Moms and Dads who are volunteering their time to help out as Parking Lot Monitors! If you can spare 25 minutes, even just once, from 8:15 a.m. to 8:40 a.m, then please consider taking a turn to help our children walk safely from the drop-off area and across the crosswalk to the school. Contact Cheryl Maynard at themaynards6@verizon.net to sign up for one or more mornings. Happy Fall to everyone!
Your PTO Co-Presidents,
Cheryl Maynard Jennifer Mann

VOWS
(VOLUNTEERS OF WARWICK SCHOOLS)
PLEASE RETURN YOUR COMPLETED VOWS FORMS: If you have already completed and returned your volunteer form, thank you. If you haven't turned in your form yet, it's not too late, just complete and send it in as soon as possible! Remember: anyone who wishes to volunteer in the school, at any point this year, must have a completed VOWS form on file, even if you're only interested in chaperoning an occasional field trip. Extra forms are available at the school office.
Don't forget to sign into the VOWS book outside the front office every time you volunteer at the school. This way your volunteer hours are counted!!
COPIERS NEEDED: We are in need of additional copiers for Cedar Hill. If you've got an hour or so to give on an occasional Thursday morning, we could use your help! The majority of the school's copying gets completed during a 1 hour weekly period which is allotted to Cedar Hill for use of the large copying machines at the Ed. Tech Center @ Pilgrim High School. Parent volunteers pick up the week's copying at Cedar Hill drive to Pilgrim High School to use the machines and then return the copies to Cedar Hill. Our allotted time is Thursdays from 9-10:00. Please consider helping out with this important job if you've got the time. The more volunteers we get the less frequently we'll need your services. Presently volunteers are going every other week but with additional volunteers the time commitment will be even less. Please contact Carolyn Norman to express your interest. Ph: 884-4621, e-mail: csn22121@cox.net.
Heads Up VOLUNTEER PRESENTERS WANTED: HEADS UP is a ten week program for second graders that presents lessons and activities focused on self-awareness, conflict resolution and bullying prevention. All presenters are trained by VOWS staff in three, two hour training sessions. Presentation materials are provided. Lessons are presented in schools during ten weekly sessions that take approximately one to 1-1/2 hours per week. The program concludes with a two hour feedback session. Training sessions begin in January, but volunteers who are interested are asked to register now. Ideally we'd like to have four volunteers so that each pair will be responsible for presenting the program in 2 of the 4 2nd grade classes. To show your interest please contact your Cedar Hill VOWS coordinators Lynn Cuddy (885-6346 or jflrcuddy@verizon.net) or Julie Hayes (884-2345).
