Get on your way to way to Wellness
Exercise ~ It's not the enemy
Find the work out that works for you. Think back to when you were a kid. What did you do to blow off your extra energy? Run around with friends? Bike? Dance? Play a sport? Try to get creative and find a way to do something your body remembers that it loves. Try a class or join a group like Sobo Sports, Baltimore Road Runners Club, or One Less Car - an organization who's mission is to promote bicycling, increase safety, improve conditions, and provide a voice for bicyclists in Maryland. Apothecary Wellness recently sponsored their event, the Tour du Port, a bike tour along Baltimore's historic waterfront and neighborhoods with rides ranged between 13 and 65 miles.
On the other hand, if you don't run and barley bike try doing some things at home. Here are 4 great ideas for at-home workouts.
Planking
Bosu
Exercise Balls
Resistance Bands
These are all great ways to get a workout without having a gym membership or large equipment in your house. We do recommend having a session or two with a personal trainer to make sure you have proper form and that you are doing the exercises appropriate for you and your body. Start slowly and work up to longer, more challenging workouts. Getting up and walking a bit is a start. Even if it's a small start you'll be on your way to feeling better, having less pain and greater over-all health and wellness.
Always consult your doctor before starting a new exercise routine. |

Fighting Fall Allergies with Acupuncture
While the best thing about Fall may be open to debate: the cooler weather, changing leaves, pumpkins; the worst thing is nearly always unanimous: seasonal allergies. Prescription and over-the-counter medications are widely available, but do nothing to help overall health and prevention of allergies, plus come with a host of side effects. Natural remedies such as acupuncture, however, not only clear symptoms of allergies, but they also help the body come into balance: clearing the underlying condition causing allergies and improving overall health.
Seasonal allergies occur when someone reacts to the pollen of flowers in trees, grasses and weeds, and causes symptoms such as itchy eyes, sneezing, runny nose, headaches, and fatigue.
Although western medications are available, even over the counter, they come with their own host of side effects, one being temporary loss of smell and taste. Other side effects include headache, fatigue, wheezing and abdominal pain. Plus, medications do nothing to improve health and prevent further allergies.
Allergies are a sign of an imbalance in the immune system. Balancing and strengthening the body can be the best thing to decrease or even rid oneself of seasonal allergies altogether.

Let the seasons guide your food choices
Seasons form the natural backdrop for eating. All of the world's healthiest foods are seasonal. Imagine a vegetable garden in the dead of winter. Now imagine this same garden on a sunny, summer day. How different things are during these two seasons of the year! For ecologists, seasons are considered a sou rce of natural diversity.
Changes in growing conditions from spring to summer or fall to winter are considered essential for balancing the earth's resources and its life forms. But today it's so easy for us to forget about seasons when we eat.
Modern food processing and worldwide distribution of food make foods available year-round, and grocery stores shelves look much the same in December as they do in July.

Set yourself up for success by taking care of yourself with a foolproof self-care regime.
Breathe, drink, eat, move.
Breathe: Practice deep breathing before you go to sleep, in traffic, or at work. Think about nothing but taking 5 full breathe cycles, inhale and fill your lungs with as much air as you can and then exhale all of it. Generally your exhale should be twice as long as the inhale.
Drink: The general rule is 8, 8 ounce glasses a day of water. However, keep in mind if you drink caffeine you will need to increase this by 8 ounces per cup of coffee you are consuming.
Eat: Eat regularly. The more frequent and smaller the meals the better chance your body has to use the fuel properly. Waiting too long in between meals upsets the system and causes blood sugar to drop, plummeting your energy level.
Move: Keep moving and do something physical. There are numerous studies out that explore the health problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle. The human body was made to move and it gets healthier with use. Bone, muscle, and joints all strengthen with exercise. |
