Q & A

Q: Is massage supposed to hurt to be effective?

A:  This is a question we hear a lot. It is a tough one to answer since everyone experiences pain differently and it does depend on what your goals are during your massage. The general answer is, no it should not hurt. If you are in pain to the point that you are uncomfortable or cannot take a deep breath, the work is no longer therapeutic or effective. Some pain is a part of deep work, especially on chronically tight tissue since the body will protest being taken out of what it considers to be a "normal" posture. However, if the pain is overshadowing the positive benefits of the work, then it may be counterproductive. It's best to communicate with your massage therapist and let them know when you are uncomfortable, we want you to have the best experience possible, a good therapist will always listen to your needs and adjust accordingly.

Cupping Treatment
CuppingCups are applied with suction to pull stagnant blood including metabolic waste, lactic acid and pathogens from deeper levels of tissue.  The blood which is pulled towards the surface allows an increased amount of fresh blood into the deeper tissues. This fresh blood brings with it everything the body needs to heal and repair the tissue including fresh oxygen, proteins, antibodies, sugars and white blood cells. The "old" blood which is pulled to the surface is reabsorbed and broken down by the body within a few days.

Most commonly, cupping therapy is used for aches and pains of various types including low back and leg pain, neck and shoulder tension, and fibromyalgia. It also helps to open up the chest and benefits the lungs to treat respiratory problems such as cough, bronchitis, and asthma. It and can even benefit menstrual problems and digestive issues.

The suction of the cups do create a mark on the area and even though the spots look very painful, they are not. The color typically goes away within 2-4 days. After a cupping treatment, the muscle pain and/or restricted range of motion is often gone immediately, and will get even better as time goes on.

Health-Ful Hints
 Optimize your immune system

In our previous newsletters we have given you tips on how to fight germs in the fall and winter seasons, this time we wanted to give you some tips on how to optimize your immunity before you get inundated with germs.

Get some rest. Adults require anywhere between 6 and 10 hours of sleep a night.  Whatever your personal required amount is, try and get it. Sufficient sleep is linked to alertness, clear skin, good appetite, and balanced hormone levels. When we sleep our body can recharge and boost the immunity we need to stay healthy.

Drink plenty of water. You hear it all the time but here it is again. Eight glasses a day, every day.  Proper hydration helps regulate your body temperature, cushion and protect your vital organs, and aids the digestive system. The more water we consume the better our bodies can flush out toxins.

Avoid sugar and processed foods. Sugar decreases the number of white blood cells that our body produces and depresses our immune system and it's ability to fight off bad bacteria and infections. Be wary of fruit juices, too - especially orange juice - most contain far more sugar than they do Vitamin C.

Nurture yourself. Make sure you take time for yourself, spend some time with friends, and continue to get regular massages. Take a hot bath, or get an energy work session, our bodies respond to our emotions, so if you're feeling stressed or anxious, it can manifest in a sore throat or a cold. Pay attention to warning signs of a sore throat or exhaustion so you can keep them from getting worse. Take a "mental health day" to make sure your emotional needs are met. When you're happy, you're far less likely to get sick.

Eat well. Any kind of nutritional deficiency may lead to more frequent and prolonged illnesses. Choose food that are in season, your body will recognize them and be able to extract the nutrients more readily. Choose fats carefully (omega-3s are best), get enough protein, and choose dark leafy greens, fruits and vegetables.

Immuni-Tea

Start preparing for this year's germ onslaught with an immune-building daily tea. This strengthening blend stars astragalus, used for millennia in Traditional Chinese Medicine to increase resistance to illness. Ginger helps keep your system warm, which in turn can help amp up your defenses. Lemon balm and lemon peel add a citrusy flavor and gentle antiviral properties.

This recipe calls for dried herbs, found at your local herb shop or online at jeansgreens.com or frontiercoop.com. If you have any of the ingredients fresh, however, by all means, use them. Drink two cups daily throughout the season. Makes 1 quart.

2 tablespoon dried astragalus
1 tablespoon dried ginger (order "cut and sifted," rather than powdered)
1/8 teaspoon dried lemon peel (choose organic if using fresh)
1 tablespoon lemon balm
Honey to taste

1. Simmer the astragalus, ginger, and lemon peel in a quart of water for 20 minutes, covered.

2. Turn off heat and add the lemon balm; cover and steep for another 20 minutes. Strain and discard herbs.

3. Add a touch of honey per cup of hot tea. Tea will keep in the fridge for 24 hours; heat it up before drinking.
