NHIT Participates in NOVA HIT Workforce Meeting
Answering the question of “where do you get a workforce for the coming storm of healthcare reform?” the NoVa HealthFORCE CEO Roundtable, convened a conference of CIOs and HIM Directors of Northern Virginia health systems, HIM/HIT Educators representing Northern Virginia Community College, Shenandoah University, George Mason University, and Marymount University, Fairfax County Economic Development Authority, representatives from HHS ONC, U.S. Dept. of Labor, US Dept. of Education, Office of the Surgeon General, AHIMA, National Health IT Collaborative for the Underserved, Association of Clinicians for the Underserved, and Virginia Senator George Barker to address the current and future Health Information Management and Health Information Technology workforce shortage. The goal of this meeting was to define regional employers’ needs for a trained HIT/HIM workforce to implement meaningful use of health information technology and to engage all stakeholders in creating an action plan to move toward increasing the supply of tech savvy, health care trained employees.
This engaging dialogue partners educators and employers to strategize about HIT/HIM workforce demands and the academic curriculum response to the rapidly developing HIT/HIM landscape. Active breakout discussion groups addressed specific workforce issues and suggested the development of a regional HIM/HIT Workforce Coalition to devise and promote action plans to address workforce training, education, and employment issues. This regional coalition may serve as a national model for workforce development strategy. A summary report of this meeting’s outcome will be released this Summer.
This meeting was coordinated by Brian Foley, Provost of Medical Education Campus of Northern Virginia Community College and co-chair of NHIT Workforce committee, Gerry Hofler, Program Manager of NoVaHealthFORCE and Ann Pham, Program Manager of NVCC’s Health Information Systems Center for Workforce Development.
