Congrats to HHS Grantees Brian Foley and NOVA
NHIT is pleased to announce that Brian Foley, Co-chair of the NHIT Workforce Development and Training Workgroup, and Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) were recently awarded a $6 million grant for ONC’s Competency Examination Program. This program is intended to create a tool to assess basic competency for individuals trained in short-term, non degree health IT programs and for members of the workforce seeking to demonstrate their competency in certain health IT workforce roles. The implementation and maintenance of health information technology (HIT) requires a trained workforce, and NHIT is certainly proud to have such a valued stakeholder, like Brian to play such an integral role in supporting our populations of focus in this endeavor.
HHS Announces over $400 million for HIT workforce and meaningful use
Over the past week, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced over $400 million in awards in ARRA funding to build and sustain the Health IT workforce, and address the barrier to achieving meaningful use of health IT. $84 million will go to 16 universities and community colleges to support the training and development of more than 50,000 new health IT professionals. Click here to read the HHS press release. $60 million was awarded to four advanced research institutions to focus on solving current and future challenges which permit barriers to adoption and meaningful implementation of HIT. Roughly $267 million has been awarded to create 28 additional Health IT Regional Extension Centers (RECs). Click here to read the HHS press release. The number of RECs created from ARRA funding now totals 60. It’s estimated that at least 100,000 primary care providers and hospitals will benefit from the RECs outreach and support services over the next two years.
