Elevator Code Changes Proposed
Seeking your input
ISHE member Wayne Tuckness attended a Stakeholder Meeting meeting of the Idaho
Division of Building Safety last month. As a part of the meeting, Gary Barnes, DBS Elevator Program Supervisor, gave a presentation on the significant changes of the 2010 editions of ASME Elevator Safety Codes that may impact NEW elevator installations. This code edition is to be adopted next legislative session. Gary is looking for an input to these changes including any exclusions that may want to be added to legislation
Following are Wayne's comments: The meeting was very informational with some proposed changes to the 2007 code. All those would affect new installations. One point came up as a side bar that I thought might be something members would want to comment on. According to current code, to work on the electrical of an elevator requires a journeyman's license and the rest "reasonable knowledge or training" so some of the maintenance work could be performed by in-house mechanics. The state is proposing an elevator mechanics license that would remove the electrical license and incorporate it all in one. This would require who ever worked on an elevator to be licensed by the state. It could impact larger facilities that have trained mechanics. I encourage members to visit the DBS website and view the meeting minutes and direct their comments to Gary Barns or Al Caine. Other proposed changes can be found on the document IDAPA 07 Title 04 Chapter 2 and can be requested from Gary on the DSB website.

Fire Sprinkler Inspection Standards
ISHE Member Bill Morgan shares information
For hospitals that use Joint Commission accreditation for deemed status purposes: At least quarterly, the hospital tests water-flow devices. Every 6 months, the hospital tests valve tamper switches. The completion date of the tests is documented. Note: For additional guidance on performing tests, see NFPA 25, 1998 edition (Sections 2-3.3 and 3-3.3) and NFPA 72, 1999 edition (Table 7-3.2).For hospitals that do not use accreditation for deemed status purposes: Every 6 months, the hospitaltests valve tamper switches and water-flow devices. The completion date of the tests is documented.
Note: For additional guidance on performing tests, see NFPA 72, 1999 edition (Table 7-3.2). One note from the Compliance side, new standards for fire sprinkler inspections go into effect July 1. There is an increase in the inspection frequency from semi-annual to quarterly for flow device testing. There is also some additional language required on the fire alarm system testing documents. I'll copy you that as soon as I see the new standard. (note: we will place this on the ISHE Website) |
