Mayor Nutter addresses the crowd at Vernon Park
|
On Saturday, November 5, over 100 community members and Vernon Park stakeholders came out to complete and celebrate our rain garden. Over the past six months, TTF has spearheaded a major renewal in Vernon Park, leading over 20 community organizations in the effort to clean, green and beautify the park. Our collaborative work inspired Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society to choose Vernon Park as the signature site for their LOVE Your Park: Fall Edition. During the event, volunteers raked and planted, while stakeholders put the finishing touches on the rain garden. In addition, stakeholder groups hosted informational tables and family activities.
The day's program included speeches from Mayor Michael Nutter, Parks & Recreation Commissioner Mike DiBerardinis, Water Department Commissioner Howard Neukrug, Barbara McCabe from Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, Maitreyi Roy from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, TTF's own Julie Slavet, and Ruth Seeley from Friends of Vernon Park.
TTF completed this project with a fantastic group of partners. Learn more about the project and see a complete list here! Also, check out this great article on the project from NewsWorks.

DO YOU HAVE A RAIN BARREL AND IS IT READY FOR WINTER?
| Do you have a rain barrel? We are tracking rain barrels in our watershed as part of our watershed improvement efforts. Reply to this enewsletter and let us know your name and address. Send along a photo of you with your rain barrel! If you have a neighbor who has a rain barrel, please pass this along to them as well. Let us know how your rain barrel is working out for you.
We'll recognize your contribution to improving the health of our creek during the coming months.
Don't let your rain barrel freeze in the winter months! Get your rain barrel ready for winter with these easy steps:
- Disconnect the downspout from the rain barrel.
- Reattach a downspout extension to the main downspout to funnel water away from your home.
- Empty the rain barrel.
- Flip the rain barrel upside down and store it outside. If you have room, move the rain barrel into a garage or basement.
