After a very busy summer, TTF is gearing up for an even busier fall, with the addition of a new full-time staff member, stormwater management project installations at Clearview Community Park and Vernon Park, and multiple clean-ups in Tacony Creek Park and at Wall Park! Read on to learn more about some really exciting news and upcoming events!

celebrate stormwater management projects in germantown! 

Clearview Community Park VolunteersWith the help of our dedicated partners, including the Philadelphia Water Department, the Chew and Belfield Neighbors Club, Home Depot, KJK Associates, NAM Planning and Design, TD Bank, and Weavers Way Co-op, TTF has transformed a former vacant lot into a community meeting space planted with native trees, plants and shrubs. Please join us on September 14th from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. to celebrate this transformation and tour Belfield Avenue, Germantown's first  Green City, Clean Waters green street! Special guests will include Howard Neukrug, Commissioner and Joanne Dahme, Public Affairs Manager of the Philadelphia Water Department. vernon park improvement effort HEATS UP 

Vernon Park VolunteersOur Vernon Park Improvement Effort is really off the ground! Volunteers from the community, park patrons (including the Pinochle Playing Posse), students from Temple and the University of Pennsylvania, volunteers from the Chew and Belfield Neighbors Club, seasonal landscaping employees from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and over 20 committed community and citywide organizations have participated in the effort to clean, green, beautify and incorporate stormwater management features in the park. Read more about our Vernon Park project in this article from WHYY's NewsWorks. Stay tuned for our big rain garden installation and ribbon cutting celebration in mid-October! In the meantime, we have lots more events to attend, including our Every Other Wednesday Clean-Ups and a critical community meeting on September 29th. WELCOME TO STEPHANIE CLYMER, TTF'S NEWEST STAFF MEMBER! 

Steph ClymerTTF is pleased to announce the addition of Stephanie Clymer to our team. Steph is TTF's new Education and Outreach Assistant through the AmeriCorps VISTA program. She is a recent graduate of Arcadia University with a major in Biology and dual minors in Spanish and Environmental Studies. Steph is also the former President of the Arcadia University Environmental Network, where she served as a strong partner and volunteer coordinator for TTF events over the past several years. NEW PUBLICATION: An evolution in watershed thinking 

Check out An Evolution in Watershed Thinking, a new document developed by the Philadelphia Water Department, Wallace, Roberts & Todd, and TTF. This document presents our vision of a healthy creek flowing through a thriving Tookany/Tacony-Frankford watershed. It illustrates current issues facing the watershed, strategies for
improvement, and a vision of a revitalized watershed community. Every day, TTF and our partners are getting closer to making this vision a reality!

TTF is looking for a name for our monthly newsletter and we want YOUR input! Send your suggestions to Katie Donnelly at katie@ttfwatershed.org. The TTF staff will vote, and the creator of the winning name will win a beautiful Earthlust water bottle and a TTF bumper sticker!

UPCOMING EVENTS

September 10: 2011 Pennsylvania Coast Day [Partner Event]  

Discover the wonders of Philadelphia's tidal rivers at Pennsylvania Coast Day, where almost 20 interactive displays and children's activities will be featured. Visitors can also boat tours of the Delaware River aboard the RiverLink Ferry, embark on the Wonders of Water Challenge for a prize, paddle Penn's Landing in a kayak ($8 per person) or swan boat ($10 per boat), take free deck tours of the Kalmar Nyckel, Delaware's official tall ship, and watch dragon boats race during the Southeast Asian Dragon Boat Festival.

September 14: Celebrate Stormwater Management Projects in Germantown! 

Please join the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership and our partners to celebrate two new exciting stormwater management projects in Germantown: a former vacant lot turned native garden and Germantown's first Green City, Clean Waters green street!

September 14 & 28: Every Other Wednesday Cleanup in Vernon Park   

In an effort to clean, green, beautify and manage rainwater in and around Vernon Park, over 20 local and citywide organizations are collaborating with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and TTF on this community improvement effort. Please join your community and volunteers from the Chew and Belfield Neighbors Club (CBNC) for bi-weekly trash cleanups, gardening, landscaping, positive presence, and a rain garden installationl!

DATES: Wednesdays, September 14 & 28; October 12 & 26; November 9, 2011 

TIME: 10:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. 

PLACE: Vernon Park, near the Germantown Avenue entrance (Free Parking is available in the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church parking-lot off Rittenhouse St.)

September 17: International Coastal Clean-up at Wall Park 

Join TTF in a worldwide effort to clean-up our waterways! Help clean up and tally trash along the Tookany Creek's banks. Volunteers needed and groups are welcome! Please be sure to wear appropriate clothing.

September 21: Tacony Creek Park Community Input Meeting [Partner Event] 

The Parks & Recreation Commission is dedicated to improving safety, cleanliness and usability of all of Philadelphia's Parks and Recreation facilities. Join the Parks & Recreation Commission and community leaders to discuss specific issues of safety so we can work to address these issues and create an environment that is safe, fun and beautiful. This is a formal meeting of the Parks & Recreation Commission.

September 24: Stream Clean-up & Love Your Watershed Day

Join TTF and the Scattergood Foundation at our new monthly cleanup series. If you don't feel like getting dirty, that's okay! We will have information from the Energy Coordinating Agency about how to conserve water and save money in your home and how to get a FREE rain barrel installed outside of your home. You will also learn about improvements and restorations that will be occurring in and along the Tacony Creek Park and programs for you and your kids that will be happening throughout the fall at your neighborhood recreation centers.

September 29: Vernon Park Improvement Effort Community Meeting 

Please join with other community residents and organizations to learn about the design for the Vernon Park rain garden. TTF, Philadelphia Water Department and Friends of Vernon Park will discuss current water issues in Philadelphia and how this project will help to address them. Learn about how you can participate in the rain garden installation and ongoing park efforts.
