Creating and Using Secure Passwords

Jason Rubsam

We all struggle with creating secure passwords that are easy to remember.

Here's a few tips that should help out:

A secure password should be at least 8 characters and contain at least 3 of the following 4 items:
·         Upper Case Letters
·         Lower Case Letters
·         Numbers
·         Symbols (@#$%^)

A secure password should not contain:
·         A person or animal's name
·         Your username
·         Any dictionary word

So how can you create an easy to remember password and still adhere to these rules?  One method is to base your password on a phrase that is meaningful to you but hard for someone else to guess.  Let's look at the following example:

'Let's follow the yellow brick road' = Lftybr

Now you have a 6 character password.  Let's pad it with a couple of numbers to lengthen it to 8 characters = Lftybr30

Now let's substitute a symbol for one of the characters: Lft#br30

So now we have a password that seems random, but is easy to remember if you just think about 'Let's follow the yellow brick road'.

Here are a few other examples:
·         There can be only one = Tcbo1!!!
·         I really enjoy playing with my son Ash = Ir3pwm$@
·         Tiny and Squeaky are very silly cats = T@sRvsc!
·         I really love a good knock-knock joke = irl@gKKj:)

See what you can come up with!

HELP!! Jason is going BEHIND BARS!

HELP!!
Jason Behind Bars
Please Help Me!  I've been accused of having a big heart, and I'm going "behind bars" for good to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  The MDA deputies will be "arresting" me and taking me to the Texas Roadhouse to server my time on August 25th.  I need to start raising my $1,600 bail before the lock-up.  I need your help now to guarantee my quick release!

Your tax-deductible donation to MDA will help continue research into the treatments and cures for 43 neuromuscular diseases.  Your support will also help MDA provide services to patients in Tippecanoe County, including assistance with the purchase of wheelchairs and leg braces, clinic visits, support groups and a week-long summer camp for kids.

Any and all size donations are appreciated! You can DONATE HERE.

Thanks and have a great day!

Bert's Tech Tips - How to Make a Folder and Organize Your PC

Bert StevensAs a Service Tech the thing I notice the most is how documents and pictures are just put on your Desktop, in My Pictures or My Documents in an unorganized fashion. So that will be the subject of Tech Tips how to make a folder and organize your PC. This will not only uncover that favorite picture used as your background, it will make your documents and pictures easier to access at a later date.

The first thing is to choose a place you would like to place your new folder.  In this example I'll be making a new folder on my desktop. You can do the same procedure in "My Pictures" or "My Documents" folders. Right click, select New, then Folder

Once the new folder appears you will have to name it by typing in the new name of the folder.  If the computer won't let you just type in a name for the folder, right clicks on the folder and selects "Rename" from the list that appears.

Tech Tip 2
Now just drag and drop the items you want to store in this folder and be well on your way to organizing your PC.

Apple Yanks iPhone App After Hidden Feature Revealed
Computerworld - Apple yesterday yanked the popular Camera+ iPhone app from the App Store, apparently in a dispute over a violation of the company's developer agreements.
According to John Casasanta, a principal in Tap Tap Tap, Apple rejected a new release of Camera+ earlier this week because the program lets users snap photographs with the iPhone's volume control buttons. Apple's own photo-taking application operates with an on-screen shutter button.... Read the rest of the article

IBM introduces its Personal Computer

IBM Personal Computer IBM introduces its Model 5150, lending legitimacy to microprocessor-based computers and giving birth to the Personal Computer (PC). IBM's first PC ran with a 4.77 MHz Intel 8088 microprocessor and used Microsoft's MS-DOS operating system. In 1983, Compaq Computer Corp. released the first clone of the IBM PC, a machine embodying an identical copy of the PC architecture -- which IBM had made publicly available -- and marking the gradual decline of IBM's share of the personal computer market.

The PC architecture, based on Intel's x86 microprocessor family, continues to dominate desktop computing with over 85% of PCs using an x86-based CPU.

The First Computer User Group, SHARE, Is FoundedShare

SHARE was founded by users of IBM's Model 704 computer, shown at right. SHARE is founded in order for the growing community of IBM computer users (mainly aerospace companies on the U.S. West Coast) to exchange information and programs. The first meeting included scientists and engineers whose companies had ordered IBM's newest computer, the 704. Sparked by quick growth and the fact that its members were some of IBM's largest customers, the group had significant influence over IBM designs and customer support.
