Uncover the many ways technology empowers education. With change comes challenge, so new problems must be addressed as well. Read about some recent applications of technology to advance learning:

  • Mobile learning: Not just laptops any more: New advances in mobile technology could help schools realize the promise of true anytime, anywhere learning

Not all that long ago, the term "mobile learning" implied laptop computers and mobile carts that were wheeled from classroom to classroom. Now, as a growing number of students carry smart phones, tablets, and other mobile devices that can connect to the internet wirelessly through a cellular as well as a Wi-Fi connection, the definition of "mobile learning" is expanding-and with it, the possibilities inherent in the term.  Full article >

  • Tips and success stories for effective mobile learning: New report profiles a handful of districts operating effective mobile programs

More and more schools are using mobile learning devices to help boost student engagement and achievement, and a new monograph from the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) examines some of the best practices in mobile devices from schools across the nation.  Full article >

  • iPad gives voice to kids with autism

A communications revolution. A search for "autism apps" for the iPad in Apple's App Store brings 764 hits. About 142 were released this year. Similarly, dozens of assistance and education autism apps have sprung up on tablets and other devices running Google's Android operating system. The accessibility of online stores as a platform for apps has opened a new avenue for parents. Those with the know-how are able to create apps based on their child's specific needs.  Full article >

  • Solving the challenges of mobile device management: Experts discuss how to keep kids on task ... and other barriers to mobile learning

While the potential for mobile learning with smart phones or other portable devices is huge, many challenges remain before everywhere, all-the-time learning becomes a reality. One such challenge is how to police the devices to make certain students are using them only for tasks that have to do with learning and are not accessing inappropriate content.  Full article >

  • Help your students become better web searchers with this new Google site

For today's students, internet literacy-knowing how to find and understand information on the web-is as essential as traditional literacy, and now web-search giant Google Inc. has launched a new site to help teach this critical skill.   Full article >

  • E-books spur reading among Americans, survey shows

E-books aren't just becoming increasingly popular. They also appear to be promoting reading habits among American adults. So says new research from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, which states that about one-fifth of U.S. adults have read an e-book in the past year.  Full article >

In an effort to help rural faculty, staff and administrators bring technology into their schools, Blackfoot initiated the Education Technology Conference (ETC) in 2009 with the help of our valuable partners. The conference goal is to help rural schools integrate effective teaching technology into the classroom and bring lessons to life. ETC provides educators with hands-on training and tools to keep students safe on the Internet and engaged in learning. Blackfoot sponsors the entry fee for all Blackfoot Cooperative members and member schools. Please enjoy as a free benefit!

We hope to see you at the 3rd Annual ETC, August 6-8, 2012! Don't miss this unique opportunity to engage with technology!
