March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month

In 1987, thanks to the many advocacy efforts of The Arc, President Ronald Reagan officially proclaimed March to be Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. The proclamation provides a promise to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and reaffirms that they will be offered the same opportunities as every American.

The month celebrates the growth we have made toward improving the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities along with creating awareness for how much change still needs to be made in achieving full inclusion.

"Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month reaffirms The Arc's commitment of the past 60 years to provide opportunity, growth, change and respect for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities with full inclusion in the community," said Peter V. Burns, CEO of The Arc (National).

Be sure to check out our website, blog, Facebook and Twitter throughout the month of March as The Arc of the Capital Area celebrates Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

Light It Up Blue Campaign

In February, The American Psychiatric Association announced that it is considering changes to the definition of autism. These proposed changes are expected to narrow the criteria for autism, making it difficult for people who had previously met the criteria to receive services. After hearing this, The Arc decided that we wanted to get involved in raising awareness on this compelling issue. "It is disturbing that the intent to narrow the service population will result in far fewer people getting the help they need," Susan Eason, Executive Director of The Arc of the Capital Area, comments.

Autism Speaks is a wonderful organization that provides tools and resources, along with cutting-edge research. With April being Autism Awareness month, we are joining in asking everyone to turn their lighting blue on April 2 for Autism Speaks' "Light It Up Blue Campaign."

I "Heart" Art: Open House and Art Show

Love filled the air at The Arc of the Arts first Art Opening of the year. On February 1st, at The Arc's Studio and Gallery on Burnet Rd., a diverse group of supporters came out to honor the hard work and dedication of these talented artists. Guests enjoyed a variety of light snacks that were donated by Whole Foods.

The clients had an opportunity to showcase their beautiful artwork in front of the community. In the end, the excitement The Arc of the Arts artists exuded when they saw their masterpieces displayed is what made the night memorable. Thanks to everyone who came out to support our artists. You made the night a success!

Don't miss your last chance to get cards and calendars at the discounted price! You can buy them online or you can go into the Gallery at 6717 Burnet Rd. to purchase them.

Below is a video we made for the Toshiba for Good Technology Makeover. We premiered it at our Art Opening, and although we were not selected it shows off our wonderful artists and their many talents.

The Arc of the Arts Studio and Gallery is a creative arts program offered by The Arc of the Capital Area which provides services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Arc of the Arts Studio and Gallery is a place where artists explore their own art process and learn new skills. Each artist's unique perspective of the world is reflected in their works of art. The work is then displayed and sold at community events and in the beautiful store front Cool Family Art Gallery.

Austin Fashion Week

August 9-18Austin Fashion Week

The Arc of the Arts artists will be teaming up with local apparel and accessories designers for the 2012 Fashion Week. Together they will be creating art and fashion collaborations that will then be auctioned off at the Austin Fashion Week Kickoff on August 9, 2012.

In 2009, Launch787 founded Austin Fashion Week. Now, only 3 years later, it has grown considerably. The event includes nearly 22,000 attendees viewing collections showcased from over 100 designers every year. We are incredibly excited about this opportunity for our artists and for our partnership with Launch787.
