The Arc & ADL Unite for Respect
Austin: Destination Dignity; Changing the "R" Word to Respect The Arc of the Capital Area and Austin's Anti-Defamation League (ADL) have partnered to ensure fair treatment of people with disabilities by redefining the "R" word from "retarded" to "respect."
The two organizations will unite to rally respect for people with disabilities Wednesday, Sept. 1, at Austin City Hall. The event, emceed by Texas Senator Kirk Watson, will be a stepping stone to proclaim Austin a community where people with disabilities are treated with dignity and where the "R" word is redefined as respect.
ADL focuses on fighting discrimination, and one obvious population who faces challenges in the community is people with disabilities. Both organizations want people with disabilities to have support and maximize their opportunities. One way to accomplish this is through education and empathy.
"Words have meanings," says Arc Board Member Mimi Spier. "The word retarded has become a derogatory label used negatively to ridicule individuals. This campaign is one step towards dramatically changing the attitude of society and the perception of people with disabilities."

ADA Celebrates 20th Anniversary July 26 Marks 20 Years! That's a Fact!
The Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA) was signed into law July 26, 1990. The ADA outlaws discrimination in
employment, public accommodations, commercial facilities, transportation and
telecommunications on the basis of disability. Some results and future goals of the ADA are:
- Accommodations
in the workplace and closed captioning
- Although many states are continuing to
reduce the number of people in public institutions, only 10 states have closed
all institutions in favor of home and community-based
services.
- The Affordable Care Act, a recent health
care reform law, provides the missing link to the ADA by including
provisions for non-discrimination in health care.
- People with I/DD who are still confined to live in
institutions have the opportunity to move out and live in the community; no longer languish at home with
nothing to do, but instead work, volunteer and actively participate in the community; and that they and their families are able to get the
early intervention, transition, supported employment, supported housing,
transportation, respite, personal care and other services they need, rather then
being stuck on waiting lists.
- Families have clear plans for how their teens with
disabilities will transition to adult life. Older parents are secure in knowing that their adult
child with a disability will continue to receive necessary care and support
after they are gone.
Today is a day to recommit to the disability movement. Our work is far from over and your involvement has never been more important. Thank you for all you do that enables our movement
to continue making progress for the next 60 years!
