Melissa Rizzo: Head of the CLASS
Community Living & Support Services Vital To Our Community

Melissa Rizzo
(pictured below) joined The Arc of the Capital Area as the manaMelissa Rizzoger of CLASS case management services in February 2008. CLASS (Community Living & Support Services) is a home and community based case management service for people with developmental disabilities available from the time they come off the interest list until end of life. This is an alternative to being in an institution.

CLASS started at The Arc in 1991 with approximately 20 clients. Funded by Title XIX (Medicaid), CLASS now has 395 clients among 12 case mangers who advocate on behalf of clients, protect participants rights, coordinate and monitor services, document and maintain records, support participants goals, identify non-waiver resources in the community and intervene in a crisis.

"I strongly believe in doing what I can to support people with disabilities to have the best quality of life possible outside of an institutional setting," says Melissa. "If I had the power to mandate all state institutions to be closed, I would do it in a second.  Everyone, no matter the ability, can live successfully in the community with the right support system."

Melissa enjoys hiking, listening to music outdoors and any body of water. "I find it very peaceful to be as close to Mother Nature as possible," she says.

First Concert: I must have been about 13-years-old when I saw Neil Diamond with my father. He was working the back stage security.

What did you want to be when you grew up? A politician or a lawyer

What is something friends would be surprised to learn about you?  Even though I have one young child (4) and three adult children, I would adopt children if I could.

If I wasn't doing this, I would be...Providing foster care for children with autism.

If you could have lunch with anyone (living or dead), who would it be? Mother Teresa or Angelina Jolie
Respite Care Changes
Williamson County Respite Services Being Suspended

In order to adjust our services in line with current funding levels, we are making several changes to our Respite Program. Saturday Respites offered at the Bluebonnet Trails MHMR Center in Round Rock are being suspended. Clients who have attended the Respite Care Program at this location will be invited to attend the Travis County Respite, located in the Easter Seals of Central Texas facility (1611 Headway Circle, Bldg. 2) in Austin, which is held the second Saturday of the month from 10am- 2pm. We will continue to explore future funding opportunities and hopefully this change is temporary.

Effective Saturday, Sept. 12, there will be a $20 fee per session, required for each Respite attendee. Families with more than one Arc client attending the Respite will pay $20 for one attendee and $10 per additional qualified attendee.
