A Look at Packit Gourmet's Shelves in 2011

Ever wonder what flies off of our shelves the fastest? We did! And we had a lot of fun reviewing what has been 'most popular' in 2011.

Most Popular....

BreakfastBerry Berry Smoothie
As in previous years, Packit customers continued to go wild over the Jump-Start Fruit Smoothies . . .and of the four flavors Berry Berry is by far "the tops." Word on the trail is that there is no better way to get your energy up - whether our smoothies are being used as a quick breakfast or a fast and easy middle-of-the-trail debonker.

Lunch
All-American Burger Wrap
There is obviously some common ground when it comes All-American Burger Wrapto cravings on the trail - making our most popular lunch the All-American Burger Wrap.  And this means the "wait to get back to the trail head for a burger" problem does not exist anymore - not when you can have one mid trip!  And not too surprising . . . this is a super-popular meal with troops stationed overseas.

Dinner
Austintacious Tortilla SoupTortilla Soup
Since winning Backpacker's Editors' Choice Award in 2009, our Tortilla Soup has remained unbeatable in the overall "Most Popular Meal" and "Dinner" categories. And it's no wonder with flavors both authentic AND  good.   Close on its heals as runner up:   'The Big Easy' Gumbo!

Dessert
Cheesecakes!  Cheesecakes!   Cheesecakes!Backpacker Cheesecake
Definitely the Year Of The Cheesecake - all three of our current flavors broke "Best Dessert Around the Campfire" records:  Lemon, Pumpkin and Strawberry with Pumpkin edging out the others by a nose!

Grocery Items Most Favored by Camp Chefs
Dehydrated Bell Peppers | Milkman Milk Powder | Freeze-Dried Ground Beef :  all three topped the charts!  There must be a recipe using these three out there somewhere?  Beef Stroganoff? Mac & Beef Casserole?

Most Surprising Best Seller: Goldrush Sourdough Starter
Who knew?  Guess we're not the only ones tapping into the Packit Grocery to resource ingredients we can use both at home AND in the backcountry!

Generated the Most Interest: Chicken Stock Powder
Can't even guess how many times we have heard this question:  "What are the ingredients used in making your Chicken Stock Powder?"  And how many times we have answered:  "Just exactly what you would hope for: meat, bones and water!  As simple and good as that!
New Additions to the Family
Meals that Made the Grade in 2011

As you may have guessed  by now - the Packit Gourmet team LOVES to eat! And this is one reason why we continue to introduce new meals at a steady pace.  The following family-favorites-inspired meals won a spot in the 2011 New Meals Lineup:

ShepherdsPieA Shepherd's Cottage Pie

This hearty beefy stew with farmstead veggies (corn, sweet peas, peppers and mushrooms) served over a bed of cheddar cheese mashed potatoes  - was inspired by an ultimate comfort-food dish Grandma Avis used to make in her Shenandoah Valley kitchen.

Texas State Fair Chili Texas State Fair Chili

Chock full of chunky ground beef, beans, tomatoes, peppers and chili spices; topped with crunchy corn chips and cheese - this one was based on what we call  "Frito Pie" down here in Texas.  Did you know Fritos got their start in Texas?

Kickin' Chicken Hot Wings Wrap Kickin' Chicken Hot Wings Wrap

Our Kickin' Chicken Hot Wings Wrap brings the spicy goodness of our favorite Brooklyn Hot Wings joint to the backcountry!  Ready in minutes with just a splash of cool water, we think this wrap makes a great trailside lunch or a  pre-dinner appetizer over drinks with friends.

Santa Fe Breakfast Corn Pudding Santa Fe Breakfast Corn Pudding

Blending our favorite recipe for Interior Mexican Corn Pudding with some neighboring New Mexico Hatch Chili Peppers; this southwestern savory "soufflé" pairs corn and two cheeses with just a kiss of sweetness for the perfect morning sendoff.

Happy Hour Snack Pack Happy Hour Snack Pack

A take-off on our favorite Happy Hour spot in Austin - the "Pack" features three new 'snacks' that are sure to  bring a whole new meaning to sipping around the campfire: Pico de Gallo Salsa, Queso Rico and Chorizo Bean Dip... paired with, of course, a pitcher of our favorite Moonshine Margaritas!

A Few of Our Favorite Things

2011 kept us busy! Check out what we've been working on and chatting about over the past year:

In case you haven't noticed, our Website got a movie star makeover this year!  The result was an upgrade that made the site more sleek, beautiful AND user friendly.

Responding to many "how-to" questions from outdoor chefs  -  "Ask the Chef" became a regular fun way to share tips and advice from our in-house Packit Gourmet Chefl!

We LOVED the fun results of our previous photo contests so we've decided to let the fun "keep on coming" by making it an ongoing event!  We extend an invitation to one and all to send us your photos showing Packit Gourmet along for the ride in order to enter for a chance to win more great grub for your next backcountry adventure.

Shuge Mery made a video testing and tasting our Dottie's Chicken & Dumplings. Hi-larious! We all got a laugh out of it. Be sure to check it out
Christina Haro and her then boyfriend (now fiance) Tim Heartquist, took Packit Gourmet along on a camping trip at Snag Lake where Tim popped the question over a spicy steaming bowl of Zydeco Red Beans & Rice!  It was enough to bring tears to our eyes too!
